08' 700 piston scoring

I have my sled tore down at the moment, and I was just about to install my newly ported cylinders when I decided to take a better look at my pistons. I wish I would have noticed this a month ago, that way I could of replaced them while my cylinders were out of state. The mag side and PTO side have about the same amount of scoring, and its on the intake and exhaust side. I think I should replace them, but am I over reacting. My understanding is that there should never be any scoring in any matter, is this correct? Oh well, thought it was interesting to have this on a 700, since everyone is having problems with there 800. All the groves (scoring) are nice and smooth.

those should be fine midge...personally I replace pistons if I have it apart and it has more then 1000 miles on it, especially if it has been overheated or abused in any way..I figure it is cheap insurance..would suck to put back togeather and break a skirt in 200 miles...

I have just around 1000 miles, but have never over heated, and it has always ran awesome.

midge, if it was mine I would put pistons in just cause...on our race motors we used to run them up on the dyno for 2 hrs..then pull em down and rering them(no rehone just new rings)that normally picked up 20-30 hp on a V-8 ...when I used to race motorcross we reringed for every event, new pistons every 2nd to 3rd...depending on how hard we screamed them....since a sled turns max rpm pretty much all the time I would replace them....

looked at your pic agin. looks like you also need injector o rings. green, blue, tan ,three total

The o rings are fine, and there is no 3rd o ring used.

This is real scoring, and the exhaust side is worse.

After closer inspection and really thinking about it, I'm just going to go with new rings. Any tips for doing anything special during reassembly with new rings? I figured I will just coat the pistons with a little oil, and after the cylinders are on just pour a little oil down the cylinder for initial fire up.

coating the pistons on assembly is good..also pour a little bit on the rod bearings..shouldnt need any in the plug holes after assembly...make sure you seal up the airbox seam to keep the crap out....

Sounds good Aksnowrider, I have to modify my airbox anyway with the new SLP airhorn, so I will attack the whole thing with some good silicone.

I always use brakleen to wipe everything down with before I use silicone on it(best i have found as far as silicone is permatex black rtv..works very good)

Usually on plastic I will also scuff the plastic with some 220g paper to help the rtv black get a better bond. I will also plan on sealing up around my headlight, and around the headlight adjustment knob.

if you go by your dealer..walk over to one of the new 10 sleds..pop the fancy little cover polaris came out with for the adjuster and carry it over to the parts counter...you guys ever come down and ride eureka? thats my stomping grounds most of the time...

Have never ridden Eureka, I'm hoping that everyone can make it there this year for the forum ride. I also hope that more of the forum members make it to Valdez this year. Dash, myself, and a few others had a awesome ride there this year during the hillclimbs and also during the Forum ride last February.

yeah I missed most of the forum rides last year including valdez climbs..hopefully this year...i have a trapping cabin way back in eureka..alot of great riding back in there....am hoping to make most of the rides this year..met ICR, Mag and Shwee last year late season up at cantwell..but the snow sucked...still alot of fun meeting peeps...

I have met ICR, but have yet to meet Mag and Shwee. I have a feeling that will change this year. Cantwell had pretty good snow last year by the igloo and up the Denali, sucks that you ran into bad conditions after making the trip up. Hopefully we start getting dumped on soon, but either way doesnt look like there will be much riding until February the way its going right now. I will just have to take lots of time off of work to make for a lot of riding from February-May.
