07 M8 Wiring in GPS

OK, I'm a dummy when it comes to anything electrical. I would like to be able to power my GPS off of the sled (07 M8). I did a search on this and found out that there is a plug behind the heat shield under the steering column. This is all good and dandy but how do I hook up my GPS to this to get the required power?

Thanks,

Mike

Do you have a 12V power cord for your GPS? If so, splice it into a 2-prong flat connector at the autoparts or hardware store that looks like this...

12V DC Connector on 2007-2008 Ms...

I did that on my 02 ZL 500 and it worked for a little while, 2 weeks or so then my GPS would work on the charger cord any more. I researched it a little more and found out that at idle it was AC and at about 3000 rpms it turned to DC voltage. I was thinking about using the Polaris Cigarette lighter plug (part # 2872214) with a built in regulator or buy This

There's no need for that aftermarket voltage crap/Poo parts on a '07 or '08 M. These two years of Ms (and Crossfires) are different than the old ZR/ZL/1Ms and '09-'10 Ms that are AC voltage.

The '07-08 Ms have a nice stable DC voltage all the way through the rpm range using the plug circled in the photo above.

OK, top or bottom plug?

I looked into it, I'm not saying you don't know what your doing but i think it spells disaster. I checked power and its AC and not DC power. I did this on my older ZL and ended up frying my garmin.

I'm going to be tying into the voltage regulator, it is DC voltage.

09 dc power

Silverram---on your 09 it is ac at that plug. I wired in my gps using the arctic cat power supply ( I think from a crossfire, I do not remember the part # ). I was going to make my own, but this is very clean and stock. That power supply is available from cat.

There's no disaster in the instructions, it's all there in bold.

On the 07 and 08 M sleds, this is a wire you can definately tap for clean power. Its the red wire with blue trace, coming from the engine side, front, of the plug on the Chassis Control Unit. I've been running my GPS, EGT, O2, and my Boondocker off of it for a couple years now.

From there I ran a power wire to a 12 volt accesory port (think cig lighter receptical), this way you can power any common 12v accessory if you need to. (cell phone, Ipod, etc)

For more information, you can see my other thread, some of it applies other than where exactly to tap for power. How to wire for 12v power on '09-'10 M Sleds

The red wire with blue stripe is the same wire that runs up to the plug by the steering post ('07-'08s). No need to splice or tap - plug and play.

Silverram I did everything you did but I added a 12V lead acid battery on top of the footwell to take up surges and allow you to keep the gps on when you stop for a break. It works good, you just disconnect the ground when the sled sits for awhile. The battery came from snobunje but any small sealed lead acid 12V battery would work.
