07 m8 slp pipe....still kind of a dog,Now what?

Just bought a used 07 m8 153, but I'm throwing on a 162. It has the slp pipe and slp air intake. Holds 7950 climbing the steep and deep with the help of mtx weights. It just seems like its lacking some power here somewhere. Doesnt seem much better then my m7, actually very close. I'm sure my old 02 rmk 800 had more snap and power. Maybe its the 5 years on a yami turbo, but I'm sure this babies got more potential then this! Someone must have some magic recipe clutching/gearing info for me. Right now I'm sure I will be getting spanked by the xp's. With this pipe I thought it would narrow the gap, but not the way it is now. Pm me if its top secret.:beer;

Im a bit curious about this too. Put the pipe on my 07 M8 153 and still get takin to the cleaners by my old mans stock 08 M8. Like stated above, thought the pipe was gonna make a big difference was almost the opposite.

I think it's all in the secondary. AC went from the best stock secondary to the worse with the diamond drive. IMHO.

I agree what is your clutching looking like. Also what kind of fuel pressure are you running and or what are your BD box numbers? I have read several times where guys stock fuel pressure was a little to low so they were not getting enough fuel to run the pipe at the right temp/performance.

My 07 162 with porting/head/torsion clutch wasn't running any better than my fathers stock 08 153.
I sold that sled and got an 08 with no complaints. I know that they say no changes were made to the motor, in fact I use my 07 ported jugs, and I had an 08 rear susp in my 07, but the 08 runs much much better.

bd #'s

Make sure your not running to rich, either. On my 07 with an slp kit and an rkt head I'm still pulling fuel from 6700-8100rpm, not adding when i add it loses r's and won't hold them as well. So my sled must be (and was) very fat stock. fuel pressure was 48+ Try ,carefully, going down on your box . Check your plugs and watch your r's and see if you don't pick up some power. And as stated above make sure your clutching is on.
Remember it's just a pipe,not a turbo,so don't expect too much.

Sell it and get one of these!

What? No ones gonna post there killer clutching combo for the m8? I'm not used to this........Over the last 5 years over in the yami section, Myself and other dudes were more then happy to help you get your sled dialed! Maybe I'm not a cat boy and should trade it in on a new xp? Come on guys!

well your assuming your going to get spanked by the other sleds..maybe not...the delivery might be unaccustomed to...you might do ok...anyway stock i got spanked. off the line by phazer turbo and doo;s..still stock i ran dalton adjustables with tip loaded ...38/46 helix...d and d backshift ..d@d red primary..73 grams....2400 ft ele...i carried the phazer turbo by three lengths for 600 ft then he gained and i was history for him at about 1000...understandable....never got a chance to try it against the doos...cause i went bigbore...but im certain it would have faired well...the sled will perform in the powder and handling and sidehilling etc...you will love it.

Well i'm not claiming to be a clutching guru but heres what I think-if you don't do a rkt secondary kit then put a "shift assist "in d&d,bikeman ect sell them. Helps alot on backshift
Buy cutler/dalton adjus. weights 65-75 would be good and try loading the heel. the beauty of these are it take 3 min. to change weight.
check your rollers in the sec. Clean your clutches.(you know, this but a good reminder)
I run a cat gold spring in the prim. for low ingagement but the finish on it is the same as stock. Makes getting unstuck alot easier.
I 'm not sure your problem is clutching though. sounds like it holds the right rpm.Maybe you've gotten used to the turbo and N/A feels slow? Is the m8 not running with other sleds like it should?
I think a power claw or camo 2.5 would really do the trick. that stock chall. stinks!

D&D makes a small flat bearing that goes in your secondary under the spring to help up and down shifting in the secondary. But I have seen these sled run pretty dam good with stock clutching and just changing weights to elevation and some that don't. the most important thing I think is fuel/ pressure, mapping ect... even seen some with a head and porting spank a m1000.

the facts

i have an 07 m8 162 was sick of it the first time i rode it got spanked by my own stock 98 summit x ,i put ac 73 gram weights in the m8 was a rocket this year did cpc m8 performance package not very impressed back to 98 summit kicking my tail but after two days of tweeking getting closer kinda would like stock m8 back with 73 weights but in too deep

Ken - it's not the peeps won't share. in fact, there is an entire thread on the clutching that sled. you'll also find the only people that like those MTX weights are the guys AT SLP. :D Most of us find the stock weights or the Cutler Adjustables are better options.

Why don't you start with telling us what you have for clutching now and what elevation you are riding.

And also - are u running a fuel box? It's been noted already that the 07 M8 is kinda doggy for an 800, about as fast as an M7 up top just more torque down low - though the difference is all in the mapping, no real physical changes between the motors in 07 to 08 BUT the 08 consistantly put down around 7 more HP than the 07 did. If you can tune a turbo with a fuel box on a yammi, you can get the power out of the 07 m8. :D

M7 - 138 HP
M8 - 142 HP

Don't expect alot over the m7, your gain is really only bottom end with the 2 extra spark plugs.

The best thing i did for my 07 ,was to dump weight . Not clutch weight. But unsprung weight . The stock seat is junk , it will soak up 20 lbs of water on your first deep powder ride . If you cant afford a Boss , take that peice of crap off every ride and take it in the house. I got the little kidde pool and put it in the laundry room , to catch the 100 gallons of water that comes out of that turd.

Dump reverse! Diamond Drive Lite from BD Extreme will get you about 12 lbs .

In the 09 Cat Accy. book there is a front axle kit for 59.95 . It will dump 1.7 lbs off the front end.

Oh yea you wanted to know about clutching . Go back to Cat weights , and your stock weights might be close . A stock 07 needed weight added to the drive clutch . For 5 - 8 K atleast.:beer;

I will offer my opinion based on my experience having had 1 or 2 New M8's every year since they came out..

1) The 07 M8 makes slightly less power (about 3 HP) than the 08 or 09 M8.. BUT the performance difference on the hill is HUGE when comparing the 07 with the 08 or the 09.. WHY?? IMHO, it is in the diamond drive.. I suspect the there is major HP robbing in this piece in 07 ONLY.. Why do I say this?? Well. because we have these sleds every year.. For example.. We could mod the 07 M8 (in 2007) with head and porting and absolutely destroy stock 07 M8's in all manners.. Now enter 2008.. This same modded 07 M8 will barely out perform a STOCK M8..Keep in mind this 07 Mod M8 (and we did MANY) will destroy other 07 M8's but will pale in comparision to the STOCK 08 M8.. OK, I started an investigation... Cat says, they changed the ECU programming... So, since we had an 07 M8 and a 08 M8 at the same time... we swapped ECU's NO difference in performance with either sled.. the 08 with the 07 box still ran like it did before and the 07 with the 08 Box still ran the same. NOT THE ECU... So, change the pipe and Y pipe between the 2.. NO difference.. NOT THE PIPE EITHER!!

At this point.. we ran out of time and desire to truely determine what the culprit really was.. But the 07 M8 will not pull hard.. It ALWAYS feels likeit has the brakes on.. So, I suspect gear mesh in the DD, or some sort of drag in the DD or the shafts..

2) Install the mod 07 M8 cylinders on the 08 M8 and the 08 M8 gains major power... just like the 07 M8.. So, now the 07 M8 is really left in the snow dust...

3) Clutching helps but the 07 will still never pull like an 800 should... But clutching an 07 M8 will make up the gap with the 08 or 09 M8.

Bottom line is: CAT willnot tell us where the "hold back" lies on the 07 M8. They claim it to be the ECU and pipe but we have proven otherwise.. You can definitely feel the "resistence" on the 07 M8 that is causing it to not perform to its potential.. This resistence is not present onthe 08 M8 nor the 09 M8.. Go figure..

Side note: the 07 M10 is better than the 08 M10 IMHO.. so one has to believe that the 07 M8 isuse is not in the rear skid..

So,that is my experience with it.. I suggest not spending too much time or $$$ on the 07 M8 because it will always be inferior to the other 800's (and 700's) Now if you are in a group of only 07 M8's like I said, you can get it to run MUCH better than the other 07 M8's but never as good asa the 08 or 09 M8's

I am not trying to "dog" the 07 M8's in any way shape or form.. BUT, the fact remains.. that they had a FACTORY issue that robs performance and Cat has managed to keep that "issue" hidden to this day.. You can thorw mod after mod to the 07 M8 and it will get better but it will still not perform like the 08 or 09's. So, adding a pipe or pipes to this sled will add performance.. BUT add the same pipe or pipes to the 08 or 09 M8 and the gap increases... It is very frustrating...

No problem.. I always try and be honest..

Like I stated above.. I can get your 07 M8 to run much better than other 07 M8's .. but it is very hard to get them to run with the 08 and 09 sleds...

Best option is to get the 09 M8 or an 06 M7.. They are both awesome machines... then do some good mods to it and you have a sled that will take you anywhere you want to go.. Very hard to beat the performance of a good modded 06 M7 (with an 800 kit) and you can get the 06 M7's fairly cheap..

The 09 M8 is proving to be a great sled.. We have some new products and will be finished with testing soon on it.. I think people will be very surprised on how well this sled can run.. Currently the 09 M8 has our drop in kit and it is running extremely well (this is probably the best bang for the least amount of dollars spent...very strong package!!)
We are currently testing 5 different pipes.. I think you will be surprised as to which pipe is proving to be the real performer. Stay tuned...

Kelsey

If you think its the Diamond Drive, I would say swap the reverse unit out with the Diamond Lite and see what happens.

Diamond Lite is a lot easier then selling your sled

Just my 2 cents

Kelsey,

Keep us posted on what pipe you like.
