Found a nice holdover. Coming from an 02 F-350 CC Powerstroke. What now? Has the 5.9

I'd buy it. The mega cab is nice. And the 5.9 is a way better motor than the 6.7

I love mine.
If you are going to put in a chip of some sort, go straight to the Smarty. Neither Edge nor BD work worth a crap in the 07's.
I pulled the cat and stock muffler and went with a magnaflow muffler, stock
4" exhaust though. Do an intake, and she'll be a runner. Be careful with the drive train though, the Smarty is an entirely different animal, and likes trannies!

Six Speed or Auto?

Just don't go on any of the diesel websites spelling Cummins with a "g" in it...;)

I bought it, Auto tranny. Now I have to get it setup like my old 7.3, Not much experience with the 5.9 and looking for what works! First trip around the local Highways was 20.3 mpg on the computer. WOW

I think you are better off buying it over the new motor until they can free up some of the emissions on them.. They don't crap for mileage right now.. you will be better off and happier with a 5.9 from what I have seen.. not going down the road in limp mode becasue your trucks exhaust is clogged..

Don't get too excited about the computer mileage, they aren't even close. You have to figure it out the normal way.

Great truck Bud has one and I have the shorter cab like another friend, We all have had great luck so far.

How do you figure that one? I know lots of guys that have had alot of trouble with the 5.9 and I haven't heard of any trouble with the 6.7 yet. The only trouble I've heard of with the 6.7 has to do with the emission stuff which wasn't on the 5.9. I had an 03 and by the time it had 25000 on it I had gone through two motors, a computer, and two lift pumps. There is no more trouble with the 6.7 than with the 5.9, it is gonna take a while for them to get the bugs worked out of the emission stuff and people have to run low sulfer fuel. One thing I do know is that if you have the 6.7, you have the 6 speed auto and you won't have to put a tranny in it every time you turn around, like the 4 speed. The failure rate of that tranny is over twice that of the Ford and GM automatics.

I have had four dodges.
1991 Reg Cab Auto - No problems - Still have, has a bale feeder on it.
2001 Ext Cab Auto - Ran good, paint on the pickup sucked, liked lift pumps.
2006 MegaCab 6spd - Ran like a champ. Computer milage WAS totally different then hand calculated. No problems with this pickup.
2008 MegaCab Auto - Like it so far. More power then the 5.9, love the new 6 speed auto.

I am excited about the 6.7L in the new pickup, It runs very good, pulls the tailer WAY to good. The new 6speed auto is awsome, and the pacbrake, well, I wouldnt own another diesel without one now.

got it all figured out, just depends who you talk to;) Plus the smarty should be out for the 6.7 soon!

H&S is making all the exhaust stuff already, just having a hard time keeping up with the demand!!!!!

I tried the smarties on my 06 5.9. Had to take it off. I put it on to see if i could get better milage. In reality, my 06 was like driving a hotrod and my milage went WAY Down. Being in 3rd gear and smoking the tires when you stand on it. Priceless.

btw, you will LOVE the megacab.

i would jump on that 5.9 before they are all gone.anyone running the most recent software on their smarties?so far ive tried the wild catcher and mild catcher.the 30hp wild was awesome.60 hp mild works great all around.both worked good on an 06 and 04.both trucks had stock transmissions. matt

Watch the tranny. All I know is I was at the dealer last fall when they were advertising their lifetime warranties (maybe they still offer these) and the salesman told me the warranty doesn't apply to the diesels.

Two motors??????????? What in the heck re you doing with these trucks? You have to be the only person in history to go through two cummins motors in 25000 miles. These motors are bullet proof. Did you try putting oil in it?:face-icon-small-sho

really

i agree with Cujo, i have a 98 12v with 206539 and many more after tomorrows sleddin trip, not a single problem with the engine, tranny is about to go out(stock never replaced 47re) waitin for sleddin season to be over to put the ats in, roomate 2001 with 641hp and 134000? miles when he left to utah yesterday with any 24v smarty's cant go wrong, know what your doing with a smarty great mpg and alot of playin with variables. cant wait for sled pullin but sled ridin is better:D:D:D:beer;

The first motor dropped a valve seat at 6000 k. They fixed it under warrenty, no problems. Then at 14000 it dropped another one. They took the the head to the local deisel shop and the mechanic their found that all the valve seats in the motor were under sized by 5 thou. They didn't have enough crush to keep them in the head. They replaced all the valve seats and I never had another problem. {other than the lift pumps which had a 90% failure rate}. I heard of a few other motors with the same valve seat problem. They think it was a batch of seats in a few canadian trucks. I agree they are a bullit proof motor but $hit happens.
