Read a few forums and many don't like the stockfactory fluid. DEXRONVI

Another discussion said to use only DEXRONVI

What fluid do you use?

Guess this year has to be at least TES 295™

Found this on ALLISON website.

And yet a different site says only DEXRON VI

Second question is going with a DEEP tranny pan … of 4 more quarts. Making it around 6 gallons. Do you think it is worth it? Some people say the extra gallon lowers the temps

Just called Allison transmission at 800-524-2303.
Trans serial number on LBZ package located passenger side 632 is GM built use Dexron VI
Serial number 631 is Allison built go with TES295 fluid Specification.
Has to do with material for seals AND clutching engagement / disengagement.
GM technical support 800-222-1020

Pulled off an ALLISON discussion:

The main concern surrounding the use with DEX VI in Allison applications is that DEX VI has compatibility issues with some of the seal materials formerly used by Allison. Allison has established serial number cut off’s for use of DEX VI (S/N 6310670488 and up for Indianapolis built transmissions, AND... S/N 6320784373 and up for Baltimore built transmissions used in GM pickup

Can’t speak for a deep pan, never had one, but I did put a PPE tranny cooler on my LBZ. I would highly recommend doing one if you plan to do much towing. I would say its good for about 20 degree cooler temps all the time.

Why is it cooler? More fluid? Location? Better cooler? More area?

I bumper pulled a 12,000 lb trailer up a 8 mile 13% grade temp outside at 108F and stopped at mile 6 when tranny temp alarm hit 245F. 20 min to return to 150. Engine temp did not move at all.

Flat no load 150F but long grades gets around 200F

More surface area. I have not had to stop to let the tranny cool once since install, but dont ever tow more than 10k.
