06 900 vs 09 d8 both stock

it all depends on what u want to do. if u want to climb i think the 900 is better but if u want to boondock i would say the 800 is better. mountainhorse has a good description of why somewhere on the forum. the placement of the engine in the 900 and the fact that it is a stroker throws off the geometry so u really cant throw around a 900 like u can an 800.

In the flatlands my 900 walks all over new 800s!

raw power- 900
nimble ride- 800

that being said, the way the two motors deliver the power is way different. the grunt of the 900's is addicting, they have amazing bottom end power.
dragon 800's i think of more as an awesome freeride sled, i have a 163 and it some days you forget its a 163 while riding it, its very flickable.
It just depends on what your going to do with it and what kind of riding style you have. Do you like to do more boondocking(800) or are you more of a point and shoot rider(900)? What size of rider are you all geared up? Skill level?

Im not saying the 900 isn't capable of boonocking, it definately is, just a little less forgiving.
Also im not saying the 800 isnt a climber, just a little less get up and go like the 9.

EDIT: i just remembered this is a "stock" conversation, now, the 900 bone stock needs a few things to remedy vibration, and stupid factory flaws. These small mods are not required, i know people who haven't done a thing to their 900's and they are just fine, but once they got on my 9 with the few fixes they felt a difference. Look at the two links in my signature, note both sleds have motor mounts, throttle/oil cables, intakes.... just shedding a little more light on the topic and comparison.

Good info on both replys so far, I rode my buddies 900 for an afternoon before he sold it and it wore me out. There is no denying the torque that the 900 puts out, but for me I would take the newer 800 any day, much easier to ride.

I can make my buddies 800 look silly in most situations.
His: 09 800 RMK 155x2.4. SLP pipe, Vforce reeds
Mine: 06 900 Switch 151x2.4 Clutching, 19/42 gearing
I'll run my 900 until Polaris puts another long stroke smoker in an RMK.... or... I dunno what lol.:peep:

Pretty good write-ups so far... in stock form it depends what you want to do, but with the asking prices for 900s being so cheap, you can pick one up and set it up with all the goodies for way less and have more power.

I havent spent a lot of time on the raw chassis, the times I did I have been impressed with the super light feel of the sleds, but at a sacrafice of power... if you can handle the extra weight of the 900, it will surprise you with the bottom end torque... you can literally putt-around and up stuff at 1/4-1/2 throttle... a very cool feeling as opposed to having to get into the throttle more on smaller displacement motors.

I think you'll also find that the 'bad rep' for the 900 is not a feeling shared by many current 900 owners... at least around here... Most of the people who have hung in there and done what it takes to make them run strong and dependable love them.:face-icon-small-hap

Since some of us wanted the best of both worlds the 8's and 9's provide, we just own each.

Super deep fresh pow days...9

Anything less...8

The fun factor of the 8 exceeds the 9. If I could only own one, it would be the 8. If I lived in BC, then it would be a 9.

Stock for stock, I'd take a D8 over a 900 any day of the week.

Mod for mod, if we're talking naturally aspirated, the 900's can be pretty mean ... I'd take my 900 mod over a D8 mod.

That is .... the 1 out of every 4 rides the 900 stays running, but the D8's don't seem to be significantly better in that respect :o:p

If we are talking stock to stock it would have to be the 900. Stock 8's had a LOT of issues with motors some two or three times, and yeah the 9's had fewer issues and got a worse rep???. A 166 is no longer than an 163 and you can always remove weight.

True... from what I have seen anyway the fuel mapping on the 900s seems to be right on the nose:D

That should scare the Polaris people to death.

I think they just did a better job of managing the perception on the 8s.

I think that's it....

I'm so glad I ride a total P.O.S. 900.... It's tough with such a junk heap, but for now I just have to try to manage:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-hap:D

ditto..lol..

they do manage to cover it up...but i have personally never rode a new 800..last 800 i rode was an 04 EDGE, lol..

i know a few guys with new dragons, 1 has had nothing but engine problems, and the other has been great...weird..sounds like the 900 debockle all over again..

but since i ride with the chitty 05 900, i might as well stick the 975BB on it...you know...cause its such a piece..

and then i got stuck with an 06 900, so i might as well slap all the goodies on it and turbo that piece of junk too

and i would challenge any stock 07-up dragon 700 to my wifes 06 700 (755)..im just saying ;)

You know you can polish a turd all you want, but at the end of the day it's still a turd:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-win:D

But, honestly, if I was buying anything Polaris has built in the last 5 years, it'd be a 2008+ 700 RMK and it'd get a BD turbo on it .... Doesn't seem to be any issues with the 700 motors and they are awsome under boost.
