06 755 Oil Pump

So guys, in my preseason to do list I wanted to check on my oil pump because last season I thought consumption was a little high. It appears that my oil pump is sticking partially open if I let off the throttle slowly. If I let the throttle snap closed it will fully close.

Just to be clear, I have been running the FBF oil cable for the past 3 seasons without a problem. I have the oil cable disconnected from the pump arm and it still hangs up so I know the cable is not the problem. The oil pump spring and arm are completely clean. The pump arm still hangs up and will not fully close unless I snap it closed. So I added a little bit of lube to the pump spring area to see if it would help and it still hangs up.

Finally I changed the spring on the oil pump with one I pulled off of an old XLT oil pump with the same results.

So am I looking at purchasing a new oil pump? Or is there a stiffer spring out there that I can get that will not give me the dreaded throttle thumb?

I would add another spring similar to a throttle return spring, something you can mount on the end of the arm and strectch away from the sled. I will try and dig up some pics but this is what most people do, the stock style spring just doesn't always work well.

Using a spring inline with the end of the oil pump arm.

i had to do the same thing or it don't return all the way i even replaced the pump and the new pump started hanging up after a few rides.

Most of the pumps on the 900/755's will not return unless the engine is running... it is difficult to see the pump arm with the sled running though.

So you're saying it'll be fine once the sled is running?

I had added the second return spring, but it was too stiff and my thumb got tired so I was looking for an alternative. I have not had any luck finding a lighter spring either.

Check at your local Mom and Pop hardware store. I saw a rack of springs that was loaded with all different size springs one time in this little store back home in PA. You'd be suprised what they carry in those off the beaten path places. The big name chains stores just carry whatever the biggest demand is so they are limited on what they have.

Heres my solution to this issue:

For those of you who wish to ensure that your oil pump arm is returning all the way, I've got a different way to fix it other than adding the second return spring like was posted earlier. When I added the second return spring, the pressure required to push the throttle became so stiff that my thumb would be sore about an hour into the ride.

I figured there had to be a better way. So I got myself an extra oil pump spring just in case i screwed up and started hacking. Basically all I did was cut off the existing tab on the spring, and then start bending a new one. As you can see in the pic, it moved the spring tab from the 9 o'clock position to the 6 o'clock position. Moving it to this position increases spring tension enough to make the pump lever return all the way.
