06 700. What parts to make reliable?

Okay, I just picked up a 06 700 144 track with 300 miles. Sled is all stock and I am going to install a can. Are these sleds reliable? I want to keep it as stock as possible but hate tinkering and messing with stuff. Are there any mods or updates that i should have done to keep things reliable?

If you hate tinkering and messing with stuff, you need to dump the '06 700 for an '07 700- totally different sled. That being said, the '06 is kinda fun to tinker on, has great low end power and this forum has every answer you need. Good luck and keep us posted.

READ!

if you hate tinkering, you picked the wrong sled...

Thanks everyone for the help! I have learned tons from you all. I think I will start updating and buying some parts. I do have a couple more questions though. I came off a 2007 m1000 that I bought new in 07. I really enjoyed that sled for what it was and kept it all stock. I keep reading on this forum how heavy these sleds were. Does it really feel that heavy after some light weight mods (radiator delete, can, and air box)??? Will this sled feel heavy compared to my old m1000? Just wondering if I should get rid of it and look for a newer sled before I dump money in it? Sorry for all the Q's

If you just got off an M1000 you are going to be seriously disappointed with the 700. I have ridden both, the 700 is a nice machine and goes pretty damn good with a little work, but it is in no way even close to the handling of the M1000. You are going to dump some serious money in it to make it handle like that.

I know it won't handle or go quite as good as my old m1000 but, will it feel heavier weight wise? I looked up both of these sleds weight and they are very close to the same in stock form. I don't mind this 755 having less power I just don't want a heavy tank! I think this will be a fun sled after a few updates and I'm trying to be on a budget.

if you do a few things like...

--225lb front track spring
--shed as much weight off as possible (stock pipe/can, remove radiator)
--get some holz or 08-up dragon spindles
--better shocks

it will handle fairly decent. my wife loves her sled, sure its heavy for her, but it will smoke any NA 700 on the market

then do the essentials
--check throttle body boots
--check motor mounts
--FBF throttle/oiler cable
--19/42 gearing
--proper clutching
--balance the primary
--ONLY run the 3211115 belt with proper clutch shimming and belt deflection

and a few of the small tricks here and there, that sled will be great and last you along time...

i personally am a HUGE fan of these sleds, and will never talk them down, they have HUGE amounts of torque...both in the 700/900 sleds from 05-06 ;)

ride on!!

we are here to help if you need it.

In the power department, the M1000 is a monster, no question. In the handling department, I believe it's more user preference. In the weight department, they will feel different in different situations. Comparing my 900 166 to my buddies M1 153, his is definitley heavier on the front end, where as mine feels lighter when going through the trees, but when sidehilling, his feels more 'light' both sleds are comparable weight with my lightweight goodies.

Once you do the basic checks and setup that Guido posted you will have a good reliable starting platform from where you can go anywhere.

As noted by MH, the gyroscopic effect with the long stroke of these engines makes this machine more difficult to turn and sidehill. Ride technique can minimize this attribute to a certain extent. Losing the swaybar and upgrading skis and track spring are almost a must. While I have only ridden an M8 (probably a better sled than an M1), it definitely sidehilled better than the 755. However, the riding position of the brand new M8 felt no better than my '98 Summit. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it is to ride an IQ. A few hundred bucks in handling upgrades and a little saddle time should leave you :cheer2:

Alright well i am gonna start ordering parts for this thing tonight. You guys have all been a very BIG help with your inputs about this sled! Thanks again to all of you!

I rode and M8 and the M1000. No comparison, if you have to sit at all on the M8 it sucked, I would have to get a seat right away. I have no problem side hilling the 900 all day long with the sway bar gone. The one thing I could do on the M1000 that I can't seem to do in the 900 is make a u-turn on while going down a steep hill. The IQ chassis is about 1000% more comfortable then the M's is you have to ride down a groomed trail for any length of time. Get the 700 or a 900 set up and nothing I have ridden can compare to the torque. I wouldn't trade mine for anything else.

Thats the reason I sold my m1000. I just could not get comfy on it. It always did what I wanted it to but I just didn't like the riding position. My legs and knees were always ramming into the body.

Hurt my knees bad to ride the M8 with stock seat. If you never set on the seat it was fine.
