05 Rev Electrical Problem

I'm posting this for a buddy that just got a 2005 rev 800. On his first ride out the right grip got so hot that it melted a hole through the grip. Second ride, with grips off the gauge started to flicker and the sled started to run poorly. We are thinking it may be a problem with the trigger coil? If anyone has had similar problems or any suggestions the help would be greatly appreciated. Looks like its going to be a great season already!

voltage regulator.

We were thinking the voltage regulator also, but were told by someone else that the underlying problem is many times the trigger coil. Hopefully it is just the regulator.

Would a faulty voltage regulator cause the motor to run bad. At some points having normal power and at other times lacking power and bogging down for a short period of time then returning back to normal power?
