05 900 steering post

I broke my steering post today and i was wondering if i have to pull the motor to replace it or can i get to it by pulling the tank off?

Where did you break it? If you want to pull the rider select off on the 05 you have to pull the tank. You might be able to get to the bottom of it if you pull your coolant and oil bottles.

I have mine torn apart in the garage right now but I haven't pulled the coolant bottle and there is no way to see anything down there right now.

Could you weld it on the sled? I have been thinking about cutting the post and shortening it because I thought the leverage on the post above the mount could break or bend it, especially if you rolled the sled. You just proved it for me.

i was thinking that i might be able to put a solid piece of aluminum on the inside and get it welded but i think to do it right i will half to pull it out of the sled. it was an interesting ten miles back to the truck and i dont want to half a** it.

you could try pulling the tank and the bottles and see if you can get to it. If you can't you are that much closer to pulling the engine. I could maybe pull them off mine and give you a better answer here tomorrow. I was just about to pull the coolant and oil bottle anyway.

the hardest part of pulling it will be getting the rod end off of it other than that you can get the rest of the bolts off with out pulling the motor.

Welding it

I cut may an Edge Steering post flat plate off and welded on a "T" so I could use a Dragon Style Pivot riser.

Never any issues Use a MIG keep the hose handy ---

I had the same idea. Working on getting a chromoly shaft done for the 05 with no joint in the middle an pivot riser mount on top.

Got it fixed.

I pulled the plastic consol, the top steering post mount and all the electric break and throtle lines off so i could weld it in the sled. I bought a six inch pice of steal shaft from the local machine shop and had them turn it down to fit inside the steering post ($5). Then i drilled out the center hole in the handle bar mount to 3/4 inch.

Then i inserted the solid shaft in the top half of the broken post and welded through the 3/4 in hole and then ground it smooth. next i welded the shaft to the upper half around where it broke. And then i inserted the shaft into the lower post half leaving about a 3/16 in gap. finaly i welded the 3/16 gap shut.

I would recomend doing this to any of these sleds before they break. just drill out the center hole at the stearing post mount to 3/4 then di-grind the rest of the hole out (the existing hole is not in the center off the post) big enough to insert a solid piece of shaft or tubing machined down to fit tightly inside of the post.then weld the shaft to the steering post through the whole that was ground out with the di-grinder. grind smooth and a little black paint now the steering post will be a hell of alot stronger.

P.S. cover sled with welding blanket before welding.
