'05 900, crankcase cracks

Hey! Just Joined. I've been talking to a guy who has an '05 900 RMK for sale. I havn't looked at this machine yet, but his asking price doesn't sound too bad. The main concern I have is he said there's cracks starting to appear in the crankcase. I suspect welding is out of the question (creating stresses, etc.), replacement would make more sense to me. But, what caused the cracks in the first place? From reading other posts, it sounds like the clutch &/or the crank need to be balanced. Have also read posts about crankcase to crank bearing clearances that are either too tight or too loose. He says it does vibrate, but not excessively. So it looks like a total engine teardown & rebuild would be required to make this unit reliable. But here's the deal: how much time & cash do I put into this engine when I could spent more on a unit which has proven reliability & not worry about it? Is the extra cash worth it (end up with a strong running, torquey engine)? Or, are there other engines that are a direct bolt-in? I guess it all boils down to how low he's willing to go. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If he is willing to go LOW I would consider a rebuild from IndyDan for a Torquemaster III bottom end. Bullet-proof is the word. Indy Specialties. It's pricey but WORTH every penny.

With decent near stock 2005/2006 sleds going for $3500 - $4000 .... a used sled with problems like motor replacement should be in the neigbohood of $1000

That being said... a good stock 900 will still need attenetion and money to make it reliable.

Have a look at the thread below.... READ THE WHOLE THING!

It will keep us from re hashing everthing on

2005 900 AND 2006 900/700.... Read Before you Buy

If you want a 900, you will have to realize that you will need decent mechanic skills, a week of evenings to read the write ups on this forum and others, a good place to work on the sled, and good money for outside shop services and parts.

If you can pick up the sled for a steal, read all of the info presented on this forum and do your research... then you will have a great sled that will work well for you... buy, in the end, you will have more into the sled than you can sell it for.

With the current back log for work at good engine shops shops mid-season (now) and frequent parts back orders you could expect not to ride this "900 project" for a couple of months.

If you dont want to wrench, buy a good 2007-2009 700 RMK (not the 2006).

The prices and styling of the 900's make them look very attractive... best to know what you are in for before buying.

I love my 900's... but they are a special breed of sled that can take a fair amount of work.

Many on here have stock 900's without a problem and lots of miles... but your sled ALREADY has problems... so you will need to factor that in.

Good luck in your decision.
