a friend of mine is looking at an 05 1000 and was wondering how they are for reliability,he's about 6' 225,we do lots of boondocking with the odd climb here and there,he's a fairly aggressive rider , he just doesn't want to be tinkering all the time or blowing belts, there is only one other one in town and i think he likes his i just would like some input.thanks.btw it's got a 162" track i think and in nice shape,$4500 canadian

I just bought one so I can't talk much on the reliability. They seem to be a good sled if you do the research and take care of the issues: 07 mid altitude reflash, new battery every season, if it's pull start put an e-start battery in it, delete the rear cooler, run pods or some other intake to keep it from sucking belt dust, they like venting so a vent kit helps, some guys swear by installing a t-stat but I believe just eliminating the rear cooler is enough, and upgrade the stock fuel pump to the lift pump for a 6.5 chev diesel, and when he gets it pull the throttle bodies and reeds and clean all the belt dust out.
It's a bit of a list but really only a day of work and a few hundred bucks. In this hobby that's not much tinkering.

My 1000 has been a great sled, but it does take some more maintenence then most. Can't stress enough how important it is to clean the belt dust out of your throttle bodies and put a pod intake on it. I lost 1 engine because I didn't think it was that important. I would plan on relocating your low pressure fuel pump next to your battery, that way when it goes out you will be able to quickly put a pump off of an 6.5 chevy deisel. Your battery and relays will do some weird stuff to the sled if they are defective. If he has a problem those are usually the first things I check. Definitly a big mans sled, do the right things and shave some weight off yourself ;-) or the sled its a hard pulling machine.

I would/have do/done the Tstat on the 1000, since the crank case is liquid cooled I would hate the thought of those outer races on the crank bearings cooling off much faster than the inner part of the bearings when you jump off the hard pack trail into some deep fluff and the much cooler afreeze moves freely/quickly into the motor, not to mention the ECU will put it into rich/warmup mode = lees power. $750 per reman crank ~ $20 Tstat....just sayin. As prev poster said PODS (see crank price)!

Pods/filters of some kind for sure, remove rear cooler, batt abov 12.5V overnight, the fuel pump thing, diet, 15wide chain, DJ's clutch kit, keep the eRAVES adjusted to spec and clean.

Cant think of the rest now but a search will doo, gettin tired.
Take care of those things and its a solid sled.
Oh, if you search on Amazon for the part # of those relays they are much cheaper than the Stealer, I got 10 for $1.62ea, I think the Stealer up in Canada wants around $40ea LOL
