04 King Cat Mod Help?

I recently got back into the mountain sport, been away about 8 yrs. I purchased an 04 King Cat with a d&d 1010, twin pipes, head, timing key, nitrous.162 attack. I was told the porting was pretty aggressive. Was also told to run 110/93 50/50 mix. I installed egt's as soon as I got home to Iowa. For here he has 540 mains with the needle in the 3rd pos. Fuel screws at 1 1/2. Ran good, plugs looked good, maybe a lilttle light. When I ran full throttle for about 1/4 mile egts hit 1288 and I shut down. Plug and wash looked a little lean. Going to a 560. My prob is clutching. For here he has 65g primarys, don't have any idea what the spring is, engagement about 3500.Thought Rpms hit 8300 couple times. Secondary has a 55* helix and no idea what that spring is. 20/42 gearing, which I am changing to 20/45. Stock 05 efi 900 King Cat kicks my *** in the bottoms. He also sent me 55g weights for the primary to run in Cooke City and 400 main jets. Says leave everything else alone. I think he took it somewhere to have it setup when he went somewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Dave, sorry I haven't responded to your PM yet, I'm double checking to make sure what we have in our sleds before I tell you something wrong.

Those weights seam WAY to light to me. I am running 68's in a mostly stock 900 at 8000-10000. I would think a big bore could spin heavier weights. Also, I would think 8300 is a bit fast to spin a 1010. I am have zero experience with big bore 900s so this is all just a gut feeling for me. I could be way off.

04 King Cat

Going to my shop to tinker, bought some v force 3 reeds and changing to the 560 mains. Dont have 550's so I'll see what happens. Appreciate any help though. I ordered 67g, 64g,and 62g weights form cat dealer. Also yellow/green primary spring, gears, Yellow #3 driven spring, and 47* helix. I do have a gram scale so figured I could cut weight on the primarys out west if I have to. Also the guy I bought it from said d&d told him 205hp without the spray. Spray is 35hp shot I think. Engine was built and installed at D&D.

04 KIng Cat

I definately agree the weights are all wrong. Last sled I had was a modded 02 Mountain Cat 800 and I ran 68's here and 59.5's in Cooke. Don't have a build sheet, and D&D is out of business so I am just experimenting. Trying to be conservative to start so I don't ruin my investment before I can enjoy it.

www.ddracing.com Think they are still in business. Most of us seem to be in the 49-53 degree helix range. You may find that Yellow secondary spring too soft, unless it is the Ti one. I use a Red/White or Green. I don't think they make a 550 main jet, the jets go up in 20 increments after 500. 400 seems way too lean in Cooke. I run a Speedwerx 1000, have been using 480-500 mains 7-9000ft. Which needles are in it, the ZR or MC? The MC are leaner in the midrange.

I'm just saying......

Wow! I have a 975 with Jaws twins and run 420's in MN 340's at IP in warm temps. I run 77 grams at MN and 67's at IP to spin 8,000. Although a 1010 I ride with doesn't make anymore power than a stocker, he runs a couple gram lighter weights than I do. Jetting a little richer.

Sorry, I was wrong, I have a black magic 1010 with their pipes. I am heading to the Snowies later today. TNT motorsports has a couple springs for my secondary waiting at the counter, Red/ white and a green. I have a 49*, 51* 55-53* and a 53-51* helix. Put the yellow green in my primary with 67g weights. Right now have the 53-51 in secondary with yellow #3 but going to change when I get the red/white. Gears are 20/42, also have 19/43 in my bag, want to try the 20/42 and see what it runs on the hill. Tried to fill nitrous bottle last night and valve leaks so have to order a new bottle. Have a 400/410 main jet in now, will see how that works when I get there. Have jets from 380 all the way to 620's. Going with wife so probably wont get to ride too hard. Thanks for any help.

I agree on the weights............

I feel they are too light! I have 77g's in my stock 900. I would gear it like a stock KK (19/43). Put some 72's in it, and see how it runs from there. Maybe buy some adjustable weights until you get close to where you want to be. Sounds like a fun sled, when you get it setup! Good Luck. -00's

After you've had the chain on for a week.......

Replace the 19 tooth with a 20. Perfect fit.
Try the red/white and a 51 deg. or better yet a Sno-pro green and a 53 deg.

In Laramie right now, can't get this thing to run for crap. Tried the 20/42 gears. Had to drop weight in the primary all the way to 61's to get it to spin 8000rpm. Played with 4 different helix's. End the day with a 47*. Green spring in secondary, swithed out gears to 19/43 in the parking lot today. Now seems like it is in first gear on the hill and not running any kind of track speed. Horrible in powder. Now I know about the right side bog everyone is talking about. Tried everything. Think I am going to ditch the twins after this trip. I just don't think the black magic twins like elevation. Run pretty good at home.Had great luck with SLP twins on last sled. This one sucks.

Dont give up on the twins! They keep the heat flowing out instead of back into the engine. Get a holtzman variflow or some powerjets. That will wake that sucker up through out the elevations/temp.

I guess if I knew where you were? (location)

I probably wouldn't have said a thing. I don't know anything about a setup for 6-10k feet. Good Luck! -00's

Thanks to everyone for your help. Buying a new M8, going to put King Cat back to stock cylinders with Single pipe and give it to my wife. If anyone is interested in the black magic 1010 stuff let me know. Probably would trade staight across for stock stuff.

possible problem

I have a stock KC and a 1150 cutler both run great but the stocker had a problem that took a while to find that may help you with yours. My stocker always ran but felt lazy, it just didnt seem to come on. I changed every thing out on the out side ignition ,the power valves were working fine and I had a brand new fly wheel due to the fact that I put the old one on my 1150 in a pinch. This fall my gut said change the internals even though the tested fine. Guess what!!! it rips now!!! I looked at the old internals and found that the soilder joints were discolored and that was all. What I an saying is even if you go back to stock your sled my sill be lazy.I have over 20k on the king cat sleds due to owning them and not giving in to the M sleds and most of my friends still ride them so I can help out if you would like some more info.
