04 800 missing, flywheel problems

I have an 04 800 that had the flywheel come apart on. The bolts that hold the starter cup, flywheel balance plate, and flywheel together broke. They broke on the last ride of the year. Parked to help buddy get sled unstuck, started sled to hear horrible raket. later found out what had happened. Thought it was odd that the recoil starter didnt work. I know why it didnt now. Towed sled home. Just got around to fixing it. Started sled and everything seemed fine. rode across the yard and barely made it back to shop. wont rev up and has a bad backfire. dont think its the DESS since it will rev enough to move. Thinking all those busted bolts flying around might have damaged the magneto, didnt see any damage but who knows. Anything that i might be missing? Thought about the crank being out of phase but dosent seem likely since it broke at shutdown and not at WOT. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

sounds like ignition problems. those pickups are very sensitive and with parts flying around in there, I could see them getting damaged very easily. What's the mag seal look like after the carnage in there? I've never heard of that. How do you guess it happened?

when i took it apart to pull the flywheel i forgot to put locktite on the flywheel bolts. My fault. I think i found the problem though. lots of metal shavings on the trigger coil. I think that it was shorting out to the cases. the trigger coil has 2 contact points outside that are not insulated. cleaned all the particles off put back together. seems to start and run good now. taking it for a ride tomorrow. we will see i guess. Flywheel broke on shutdown not at rpm. seal seems to be ok. it was kind of protected since the flywheel didnt come off just the blancer and starter. also protected by coil windings. hopefully got it solved.

Thanks for reply though.
Bill
P.S. Coil and pickup passed OHM tests.
