04 600 Bad Rings--Help!

So we had 90 lbs on one cylinder and 115 on the other. Took apart and found the rings flaking and bad (no surprise.)

Put the new rings in and now it won't start. Only 30lbs pressure in both pistons. The new rings need to seat. I understood that I could run it and get them to seat but I am afraid I can't get enough pressure to start it.
What now? Is this the problem? Any ideas before I have to tear the whole thing down again.
My buddy says I needed to prep the cylinder walls so the new rings will seat.
I did check the rings to make sure they were the same size as the old ones and used feeler guages at .020 to check the cylinders--they didn't appear warped. I am no expert at this stuff though. I put new seals in it and also new reeds since the stock ones didn't look so great.
Help...
Thanks!

You need to hone the cylinders, just enough to break the glaze. Are you sure its not leaking at the cylinder base gasket?

Base Gasket

I sprayed ether all around it before I tore it down and it didn't rev up the engine at all. So I figured it was ok when I started. I didn't replace it when I tore it apart because it looked like it was in good shape still.
Do you think that could be the problem?
It did get coolant dripped on it but other than than it stayed right where it was and I tried to be careful not to disrupt it.
Should I hone the cylinders AND replace the base gasket?
Or just hone cylinders?
If so what thickness gasket is it?

Thanks!

Dot goes up...

NOT down!
Problem solved and the hawk starts right up first pull.

Had the rings in upside down. A lot faster changing them the second time though.

Here is a picture of the bad rings with the center chipping off. And another of the dot on the ring.

Big thanks for the help guys!

FYI, Allways replace cylinder base gaskets. The thickness is determined by how many holes that are punched in the gasket( right between the cylinders) their are 4,5,6,7,8 hole gaskets, more holes = thicker gasket.

I would pull the cylinders back off a change the base gasket, cheap insurance. If it leaks you will have a lean condition and burn it down.

starts on the second pull

I just rebuilt my 600 ho it now has a 738 big bore kit and once it gets warm it takes two pulls to start every time. wonder why any suggestions? thanks.

need rings

I haven't replaced my rings yet, only 2 tanks of gas.
I don't trust my local dealer, probly has some bad stock ones to try and pawn off on me.
anyone out there who sells updated rings for stock pistons?

piston kits

I can get the spi piston kits for 65.00 ea. Sorry but cant get just ski-doo rings. I can get replacement rings for the spi pistons though. Can also get weisco if you have more money to spend.

top end gasket set to do the rebuild is 42.00

Happy to help any fellow hawker

Bought my 04 600 last year and changed the rings the "Very" first thing, 0 rides....

-I called around and asked every motorcycle and snowmobile dealer I could and no body could De glaze the Nicacell cylinders. I had to send the cylinders back to Xtreme Power Sports in Okanogan, Wa (were I bought it) to have it done.

-Worked well cuz it rips and there is no fear of it exploding after using Ski-Doo's updated rings.

Glad you figured it out Les.....

what rings do i get

i would like to stick with stock pistons.
i haven't torn into it yet, is it a 1 or 2 ring?
if one then i would go with wiseco's.
what year or model would i tell the dealer i have?

would stock 700 cylinders bolt right on?
if so what years?

i was told by big john that you could bolt on 700 jugs to the 600 ho bottom! not sure how the fuel mpg would be. not that the 600 is any good. i wonderhow much extra HP you would get from that mod?

Same engine as in a 2004 600ho summit or mxz 600ho, has to be 600ho carb sleds. This have single ring pistons.

2000 thru 2003 700 skidoo engine cylinders will bolt right on a 600 bottom end.

You will need pistons also for this conversion. These also have single ring pistons.

So what are you saying, when you pull your jugs off it could have any thickness base gasget on. Is this just 600 or 503 as well

bad reeds

I finally got around to tearing into the 600 today.
rings were bad but i was lucky as cylinders look like new.
not only were the reeds not closing completely but the boots were coming apart. I have already got a new set off ebay a month ago.
