02 Edge 800 EGT Safe Zone??

Hey Guys,

New here on the forum and new to Polairs. I just bought a sled via phone while im still deployed a couple days ago. Its a 02 Edge 800 with all sorts of goodies, M10 skid, new 162" X 2, fresh topend and cylinders, Team clutches, etc. I see by way of pictures that it has twin Ceramic coated SLP pipes with the bungs for EGT probes. Im not sure of anything else that it has as of yet, like reeds and jetting, but i will be home in Jan to tear it down and find all this out. It looks like the previous owner had a EGT set up on it as the handle bar cover is cut in the location where one would be.

So i guess what im asking is what is the safe range for EGT's on these sleds? We ride in the 4K - 6K range mostly. Also ive been known to be pretty adamint on making my sled go up a hill, weather it wants to, or not. Which company makes a easily readable monitor, maybe dual screen, that is also good quality?

Thanks P/K

I personally like the KOSO gauges with the quick probes. Probe location is critical for proper temp readings, if I remember right they are placed 4" from piston skirt. (hopefully someone else will chime in if im wrong). I have mine set to start flashing red at 1250 F Wide open throttle. I believe 1325-1350 is close to melt down.

Digitron has a fine entry level duel screen gauge. Temps are only relative after you establish your piston wash/plug readings. Some sleds have melted at 1100 on the gauge and some have lived at 1375 on the gauge.

EGT's

I have a bone stock (even the can)2003 RMK 800 VES with EGT's in the Y-pipe (one per cylinder within 3 or 4 inches of the piston). I bought it with 800 miles on it from a 54 year old Search & Rescue member and he installed the EGT setup. At wide open for long stretches I have never seen it go above 1000 degrees. On the trail it will hover around 800 degrees when held at medium throttle for 5+ minutes. It stays in 700-900 degree range when in the trees or meadow and climbs with a least a 2 minute separation. I have made these observations over a 2 year/1600 mile time frame. PM8.

I've ran everything from cheap old manual needle gauges with the numbers printed on the back plate that SLP sold back when the ultra was a big bore sled to the inexpensive pyro gauge setup thats digital up to Race pack gauges... They all do about the same job. It basically depends on your budget and how high tech you want to get.

One thing I will say though is that ETG's are great ONCE your dialed in and have verified correct piston wash. Until then they are pretty much useless as you can get false highs and lows just based on incorrect jetting and incorrect probe placement. You can actually get false high ETG readings from having too rich of jetting... ETG's are a nice monitoring system but I wouldn't use them to try to find correct jetting specs for your sled.

^^^What he said. I have an Avenger II gauge and my temps hit 1225 usually at the max. I use them as an aide and lets me know how my engine is running. I verify with plugs and wash if I think something is up. Your temp really doesn't matter if your plugs and wash are good, you could be at 1100 or 1300 depending on probe placement.

I packed in the Egt thing after getting tired of gauges wires and drilled pipes. I think plugs piston wash sound and throttle response is the way to go.

Thanks everyone! I got them finally and installed today. Going to hit the Mountains tomorrow and see how she is. I seen that just messing around in the yard i was about 700* but not enough for a full throttle run. Ill see what it does tomorrow.

What is piston wash???

One thing i might add is i got my KOSO egt gages from Xtreme sled parts.com -- Dont buy from this yahoo if you want any customer support. My stuff didnt even ship until i posted a claim with pay pal. All calls and e-mails for 3 weeks went un answered and non returned. I dont think thats the way you should do business..

My understanding of piston wash is that the closer to the edge of the piston the carbon gets, the leaner the mixture. This indicates the rich/lean condition of the engine because the new fuel cools the piston preventing carbon burn on. So no carbon indicates a very rich mixture. This is my understanding of "piston wash". PM8.
