02/03 Summit 700 Electrical Problem

One of my neighbors has a 02 or 03 Summit 700.
Last season the electrical quit on him a couple times. All lights and the tach stopped working then came back on.
He just started it up today and it runs fine but no lights/tach are working.

Makes me think it might be the lighting coil.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting this one?
Which wire comes offf the lighting coil so he can put a test light on it?

Thanks

Has he checked out the voltage regulator? I'm not really an expert on this, but that is a pretty cheap fix if that is the problem. Also, on my old '02 sometimes ice build-up would cause the wires to come unplugged when I would open the hood, and that would kill the the tach and head light. Not sure if that helps any, but it's all I got. :beer;

I recently experienced the same thing on my 03 Summit, I found the connectors on the regulator were corroded. The three wire connector coming from the engine were OK however the Two wire connector was so corroded the terminals were green. I cleaned the terminals sealed them with dielectric grease and everything works OK now. On my sled the regulator is located underneath the exhaust just in front of the engine on the right side.

There is a relay that controls the lights and gages. It failed on my 03 700 summit after a couple of "now you have it, now you don't" with the lights and speedo. I can't remember if the tach quit too. Good news is, ski doo dealer knows what it is. $30.00 from them. I read somewhere else you can replace it with a NAPA relay for much less. Do a search on here and doo talk for electrical problems and I think you will find it. Good Luck!

I just checked doo talk and there is a ton of info on there. Lots of stuff to check before spending any money. On the mxzx/legend forum search for relay. Some folks also had issues with voltage regulator or wiring. Relay is about half the cost at NAPA. I'm pretty sure you could have whatever local parts store you have cross reference the number. I'm not sure which of the 2 it is.

I would second the remark to check the plug at the hood hinge point. With enough ice built up - that can unplug occassionally.

I have a 03 summit 700 that did the same thing last year,
it was the relay, went with the NAPA part for about $12.

Sounds like the relay, my 03 did it, get the relay from NAPA.

Try the relay, if that doesn't work: if its an 03 with the digital gauges like the revs I can send you the PDF files from the shop manual.
