01' Electrical problem

I have a 01' summit x hmk 800 that just got totally rebuilt. I put a 162 under it, had the cylinders re-nicked, RKT 82 mm piston only kit, mild porting, crank re-built, thick base gasket and a shaved head. I was up today breaking the motor in, it has probably 25 miles on it and was just breaking it in. I got halfway through the ride, after a little bit of a pull, I came to a stop, then went to get back in it, and it fell on its face. It felt exactly like when the DESS is halfway pulled off, it wouldn't run past 2,000 rpm. I wiggled the DESS plug, pulled the loom apart couldn't get it to run past 2, but when I hit the high beams to low beams for the headlight, it died, and when I kicked the grip heaters off it died. After a while of messing around, it started to run right, still missfired every once in a while, but only ran like this for 1/8 mile, then it died again. I towed it halfway out, decided to see if something had shook loose, it fired up and ran like a champ for another 7 miles until it started missing again, but now, only past 6,000 rpm, then got it to the truck, I shut it off, then I couldn't get it to fire again. All the miss fires were like a rev limiter kicking in. The only thing that I changed electrical was that I had the computer re-programmed by Ski-doo race dept. and I can't run a tail light until I get a rack. Has this happened to anyone or ever heard of it. I thought of the relay but when my buddies relay went out on his, it just lost all auxilary power, and still ran, mines the opposite! I'll start pulling the console off tomarrow to get a better look at the DESS, but I'm affraid that with it dieing when coming off of high-beams or when shutting the heaters off, I've got a bigger issue. Thanks for any help, sorry to make the post so long! Thanks!

Sounds like my 99x the trigger coil went bad, is there any backfiring? Just a thought have you tried new solid top plugs gapped to spec?

Ok, yes, they have spark, they are RKT suggestion BR 9 EYA cat plugs gapped to .020" and when you give it throttle for a little bit it loads up and backfires. I did have the stator out of it to split the cases, I'm going down to work on it later today. How do you test the stator? And when you say the trigger coil, are you talking about the coil on the inside of the oil tank, or the magneto trigger on the inside of the case? Thanks for the help.

did you try a new tether? mine started to shut off randomly and gradually got worse. as soon as the motor stopped turning you could pull the rope and it would start back up. got worse and would lose power and rpm's before it would shut off. ended up putting a new dess tether cap on and no problems since.:beer;

No I haven't, but don't you have to have those programmed? I did notice that it was loose. But why would it die when I shut off the hand warmers or drop the headlight on low-beam? Does anyone know if they run a balanced electrical system? My thinking is when I pulled the tail light off that I am overloading the system, and the high-beams and warmers on high draw more electicity, just enough to keep it running. The thing that has me messed up is I just went outside and it fired up when it was cold and ran clear down to the shop, so it might be heat related. Obviously, I have NO idea whats going on!

Triger coil is on the case halfs. When mine failed it would backfire and pop, it wouldnt move, I wasn't running a head light are tail light when it happend, But after I replaced it about a year later it just died and had to tow the sled out and when I got it home it started right up. You should try disconnecting the kill switch and see if it helps.

Thanks, I'll try the kill switch tomarrow. Is there a possibility that without running a tail light(had seat recovered and my rack is on back order) and without running a speedo(switched drivers, wasn't accurate) that there is too much electricity being pumped through MPEM? It only ran when everything was on high, a high load, when things were shut off like headlight on lowbeam and handwarmers on low, it would die. But, even then sometimes it wouldn't run past idle or 6k. I'll talk to my dealers mechanic and see if he's seen anything like it, I'm no electrition, so its all making me a little bit nervous!

If its heat related it could be the stator, it has some broken wires in the windings. When it heats up they separate causing the issues. When it cools they are in contact and it runs fine. I doubt the removal of the taillight is a issue. Ive ran my 01 with no gages or lights with no problems.

Dang! I REALLY don't want to pull the stator, let alone buy one! I guess I'll check it too! Thanks for all the help, I really want to ride but I'm not sure my dignity can take being pulled out behind my dads Mountain Cat again!

I've pulled all the stock electrical accessories off of mine with no issues as well. Doubt that is it.

But what I don't understand, is that if the stator was bad, it wouldn't be making enough electricity, but the motor when it starts to miss, if you shut off the handlebar warmers or drop the headlight on lowbeam, then it just dies. So, when it starts to missfire, it only runs or idles on a HIGH draw. It makes no sense to me!

Could it be your wires shorting out some where? Maybe where you unhooked them from the tail light? When I put twin pipes on my 03 the wires going up to the dash melted and starting shorting out and it was kind of doing the same thing that you described if I remember correctly. I fixed those wires and works good now.
