i know i know...this isnt the truck section but i figured it would get answerd faster here.

here is the scoop. i just bought an edge chip with the attitude monitor and i have fuel pressure on the monitor to keep an eye on the lift pump. anyway in any setting and at idle its at 10psi. when i give her a stab on the accelerator psi drips down to 3psi. warning is set at 4psi. people are telling me to change the fuel filter but napa is closed :(. anyways what kinda fuel pressure are you guys getin on your dodge? btw mine is bone stock :( lol

i talked to a diesel mech. and he said if it was the lift pump it would probably not run and if it did it would run like shat. when you are at cruizing speed it is at 10 psi but when you get on it really hard it drops. im going to get a new fuel filter tomorrow and see if that helps. any other time fuel pressure is consistant.

You need a better than stock fuel pump. FASS or AirDog is what you need, otherwise with to many times of stomping on it your going to kill your injection pump. Each time you stomp on it right now you are starving that injection pump. PSI numbers vary with the aftermarket pumps, but the numbers you are seeing are well within the danger zone.

Cummins book says....

10 pounds minimum engine running.

7 pounds minimum engine cranking.

14 pounds at 2500 rpm , overflow valve release

If you plan on keeping the truck for a while you can't go wrong with a FASS or Airdog.

what are typical fuel pressure numbers with the stock lift pump?

im already looking into a fass. i really hope its just a dirty fuel filter though

Sounds like a pretty standard VP44 stock lift pump. I'm willing to bet that its getting tired. Invest in an airdog system and don't look back. A dirty fuel filter could be part of the issue but I'm willing to bet the LP is weak.

You need a new diesel mech, starving your VP44 will kill it. You could drive along and have no idea your low fuel pressure, then your P pump takes a shat, some guys even replace the p pump only to have it go out again.

Don't mess with a weak lift pump get a new one on there. FASS or other electric pumps are spendy and not needed unless your highly modded.

I have a 2002 and it has the juice with attitude setup on it from Edge. It has 4 inch exhaust and a K&N intake on it. I've had this setup on it for 5 years. I had to have the lift pump replaced 3 years ago and they did the update on it at that time where they move the lift pump from the side of the motor into the tank. Before the new pump my fuel pressure was at 14 psi at idle and never dropped below 5-6 psi. After the new pump install my fuel pressure at idle is at 10 psi and drops right down to 3 psi during heavy throttle. I went to a guy here who specializes in building up Dodges cause I was worried as well. He told me to set my fuel pressure alarm down to 1 psi and run it, he said if you have fuel pressure you are not starving the injection pump. That was 3 years and probably 60,000 miles ago and so far he was right. This thing is not babied either, in winter I pull a 4 place enclosed and in summer I pull a 29' holiday trailer.

sounds like i have the same problem as you frock.
it idles at 10 and cruizing it stays around 8-9psi and when you get into it it drops to 3-4. worried as hell that it is the lift pump. i think im going to get a fass(not the high output) just for safe measure.

fass makes one that is for stock to moderate(chips etc) pickups. its only $275 and takes a half hour to instal. that is the one i will probably get. the others are all above $500 but have a higher gph rating.

Anything under 10 psi is damaging your VP! I see 14-15 psi at idle with an Airdog 150 and 11-12 psi at wot at 9,000 feet ASL.

Yeah I would get a new stock pump or a FASS quick before the VP takes a chit and you're really in the hole. If you have the money I drove an 01 with a drag comp with a FASS 150 and ran 18 at everything but pinned, and even then it only dropped to 17.

your lift pump is just weak...this is why I said gauges first.get your self the airtex stock replacement pump if you are short on funds for an air dog or fass.without the bigline kit it will hold 7-10lbs of fuel pressure even with the juice with attitude.worked fine even with 75 hp injectors plus j/a .although relocating the pump can seriously help increase the life, mounting it in the factory location can get you by for a while. .you still have your stock clutch so personally i wouldn't spend the dough quite yet for an air dog/fass.

5 and under is when you will have issues. and anything over 25 will be bad for it aswell.if you are holding 10 psi at wot you are fine.

boy, I was a pioneer in the lift pump process. blew a few vps from too much psi (if you run more than 20ish pounds be afraid) burned a pump from losing a LP, my findings were that fuel seems to begin cavitating below 3-5 pounds. that is not good, when the vp has to pump its own fuel as in you have 0psi.....you just bought a vp. I found a carter and a big line kit was enough to keep my truck happy (475hp). I can't suggest one pump over another as they all claim something devine, but pretty much if you have ever watched a fuel filter work they don't pass much air.....so I am not sold on the air killers, the stock filter does the same.

put a new lift pump on it soon. and quit rodding it till then.

Well that's cool, I'd personally never run mine with less than 10 psi! Part of the Electronics are cooled by fuel, if you run less than 10 psi the pump is running hotter than it needs to be. Since 95% of VP's fail from electrical failure, it's cheap insurance for me! I've got a hair over 100,000 miles on my current Vp with an airdog 150 and 289,000 miles on my truck  I also run a quart in 2 stroke in 30 gallons of fuel for lubrication too.

There is quite a bit of discussion on this topic on Cumminsforum.com,
A lot of people talk trash about the vp trucks, I personally have never had one problem with mine. Just take care of the small stuff like fuel pressure and KDP's.

thanks guys. i have been babyin the holy livin chit out of it the past few days. i will be calling in and ordering a fass (not the fancy one).
