Boondocker Turbo Muffler Meets U.S. Forest Service Sound Requirements

Boondocker Performance, manufacturer of turbo systems for Arctic Cat, Polaris and Yamaha snowmobiles, has released a new muffler for turbo-equipped two-stroke snowmobiles that meets and exceeds the 96-decible sound limit established by the U.S. Forest Service.

Initial testing was done on an Arctic Cat M8 turbo-equipped sled in Kremmling, CO, following standard Forest Service sound measurement guidelines. Colorado has the most stringent enforcement of sound requirements on Forest Service land. Colorado Forest Service officials have been conducting routine sound checks and issuing citations for violations.

On a Boondocker turbo sled, exhaust sound is controlled by three factors: the turbo charger’s exhaust turbine, the muffler and Boondocker’s patent-pending method of directing the exhaust exit through the tunnel and inside the track. The new muffler brings the sound levels below the 96db limit.

Boondocker’s new muffler features a slightly larger design than previous mufflers and utilizes long-strand glass packing technology that lasts much longer than traditional muffler packing.

Boondocker will use the same muffler technology for all of its two-stroke turbo applications.

Sledding in the West has become increasingly more scrutinized, especially those sleds which have aftermarket exhaust systems. Colorado was one of the first western states to monitor sound in the backcountry and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if more states were to begin sound testing. That’s why aftermarket companies that produce exhaust systems like this one from Boondockers that can meet or exceed the db limits set by the federal and state governments is good news to those who like to mod their sleds.
