a reed valve is a check valve it lets air into the engine but not out,since two stroke motors have ports not valves,the piston covering the port is the only way to close off the intake and let the engine start to make compression.so if you design a reed valve into the engine it can close off the intake port earlier(before the piston covers the port) there by increasing the compression in the cylinder,pipe back pressure also has a simalar effect on compression at higher rpms.this is a simple explanation it gets alot more complicated but that is the nub of whats going on hope this helps.
