05 ski doo top end

How many miles befor you should refresh the top end.
I have 3500 miles and runs great, It all stock.

Well, although nothing is written in stone, you will get plenty of recommendations. However, if you are asking this question you are having doubts on how long it will last....don't let the machine tell you when 'cause it's too late when that happens. Most will probably tell you that at 3500 miles it's definitely time to freshen it up. I had an '05 Rev 800 with 3560 miles on it that I traded off because it was either I spend money on freshening it up or trade it and spend some more money....so I spent more money. :face-icon-small-coo

do it now

I would replace the pistons and rings. Just use the stock set, do not not use Wiseco's!!! I made that mistake, completely shattered skirt that spun around the crank and broke my cylinder. Any one from Wiseco reads this F.U!

I have an old 700 rmk for a backup with 6500 miles or so and went to do the top end this summer, when checking the gap on the old rings they were well within spec. Checked the new rings and found almost no differance in the gap.Ive owened this sled since new so I know it has never been touched.Did the top end anyway but with the way the pistons and rings looked I think it was a waste of time.

depends somewhat on how and where you ride...

trail riding at sea level is alot diff than 80% WOT riding in the mtns.

for a mtn sled, probably a good time to do the top end (pistons/rings) check compression

Check out RKT's drop ins or if that's a little too much $$ check out Sled Head Racings Trail Torqer Kit.
Wiseco's are just fine but you need a honing done to get more clearance since forged pistons tend to expand when they get hot. My Wiesco's ran great and didn't fade off like some do.

Despite the negative things that have been said about Wisecos, I've ran them in all my sleds in the last 6 years. In my triple mod I was running 9600 RPM and put two seasons on them before I put a fresh top end in it.

The biggest thing is LET YOUR SLED WARM UP!!! All pistons expand but forged pistons expand faster. Also if you plan on running nitrous allow about 20 thousandths ring gap on the bottom ring and 24 thousandths on the top. I've had good luck with that set up and no extra honing in my cylinders. You won't get much with the Nikasil plating anyway.

The best thing about Wiseco pistons for the 800HO is that they have fixed the freeporting that the stock pistons allow. You can see that extra little tab they added to the skirt to cover up the transfer ports when the piston is at TDC. It is a noticable difference.

Hope this info helps ya :beer;

Absolutely time to do the top end. Most of the REV 800 HO didn't make it to 3500 before haveing problems. I did mine about the same mileage and they definitely needed it! I was glad I did it before having problems. My advice for pistons would be to use the Weisco double ringed pistons / rings. I used them in my 800HO with no problems.

I could be wrong but it seems to me that the 700's did better for longevity and if you have over 2500 miles you probably do not want to start a new season with an 800.
