Riding Thursday for the maiden voyage and then again Saturday and Sunday.
:D

Thats not a Honda!!!!, but it still is a sweet bike, call me when you want to ride with the big kids;):beer;

Side note - i know this is you first 4 smoke, the valve clearance thing is no joke, and the yami has three intake valves unlike 2 for the other 4 smokes, some say its better some say its worse...long story short, check the valve clearance every 10 or so rides and re-shim as needed

damn that thing is sweet jac:beer;

Thanks Ray, I've got to get all learned up on these 4-strokes.

So what's the hot setup for the YZ450F? Anyone??

My dealer tells me I don't have to do a thing to them, even Jetting:confused:
He says all I need is the o-ring chain and the air mixture screw and I am good to go.

I bought the chain and the screw and a bigger rear sprocket. I also grabbed
a few smaller jets to play with, I didn't buy not having to jet it. I guess we will see.

What about exhaust? What's working well?

Thanks.

HAtchers, I'm riding Thursday with a couple Buds if you have the time. Not sure where yet but i will be heading out in the A.M.

Jacob - post a thread on Thumpertalk, this site is all thriller no filler (no BS), they have a ton of nerds with great replies. I took my 450R apart twice now, the valve thing on these 4 smokes is no joke. The guy i ride with the most has a yami 06 450F and his bike went down a few weeks ago, the timing chain jumped the cam gear somehow (still cant understand it???) and he needed a valve job on the intake, its a $700 job if you do it yourself, oops forgot he got a high comp piston and i think those are $180ish

I can bet my momma all stock bikes can use some jetting at the alt we ride....both of mine did and i noticed some hidden power. I do think you can install a WR450 fuel on/off/res switch on your bike, no res switch on the trails is just silly if you ask me....you can also find a good used paddle/wheel combo on KSLs used dirtbike forum for about $200ish or more, thats a great deal as a typical warp 9 rim combo is 400ish or more out the door, excel rims are near the price of gold for some unknown reason??

Ill be working on thurs. but should be home fri. and ready to ride sat/sun/mon at the dunes or dirt

Nice bike Boss. No need to worry too much about the valves on these Yammy's, that's a Honda deal. I am still a full season and I would guess 70-80 hours on mine with no issues at all yet. You will like the snot out of that bike.

As was told to you, o-ring and idle air screw, although I am still running the stock chain, and you will be good to go. Some have said to disassemble the steering post, swingarm, axle, well just about all moving parts, and regrease. I did not do this, but was told they are really lacking grease stock.

If you decide to pipe it, I have a lead on a good cheap pipe. But them stockers are pretty good.

Have fun on that bugger, sure wish mine was white, that ****s hot!

Hey Thanks Bro,

What about jetting? Did you mess with it at all or are you just using the air screw?

Thanks again for the heads up.

Well I am about to head out. I cant wait to go stretch it's legs today.

If anyone can ride today we are meeting at 10:00

Hmm My buddies 06 was put away running... Went to start it last week and no go. His skipped 5 teeth on the cam chain, but luckily he didn't bend a valve.

I think the majority of valve issues was pre 06 on the hondas.
My brother has an 05 and has repleced valves and re-cut the seats.
I and 2 other friends have 06's and 1 with an 07, and no issues.
My pa and I on our 06s have not adjusted valves yet and have 20+ tanks of fuel ran through them.
Still a good idea to keep up on them.

O-ring chain is a must, just check it closely as anything but an X-ring on a honda will rub the case.
With stock exhaust, jetting doesn't seem to do much, although I agree that at elevation it should help some.
My pa and brother run 1 gallon of 110 leaded to 2 gallons of regular for the lead, but I don't and we have not seen much difference in valve wear between them.
Granted, mine and my pa's have not been checked.
Overevving will put more stress on the valve train... Shift sooner and don't rev it so high.

yup the 05 is worse then the 06 as the 06 had a big change in the engine and carb.

O-ring chain? my new chain is tight as heck and the plastic guides look good

The real issue is riding in the sand, you are always at WFO if you want to get up the hills and this is what eats the valves.....oh well, id rather eat parts then chill in my shop waxing my boggie wheels like mr ACMtnCat.....;)

My Arse has been Kicked.

Wow what an Adventure today. what was suppose to be a 3 hour quick break in ride turned into one beast of a ride.

We started at the Tibble Fork Damn around 10:30am and busted up 41 and then dropped down to 40 and followed 40 until we hit 157. Then we took 157 all the way to the pole line pass. That is a really fun and fairly fast ride.

We then decided to head back south west down 157 until we hit 83.
Trail 83 seem like a great longer trail, it was one of the few that I have never been on due to hitting it to early in the years and always getting stopped by snow drifts

83 was a blast with very few rocky areas to start with and you could keep a decent speed threw the first half. It takes you behind and then over Mill Peak. But once you get about 3/4 of the way up the trail it had a really rocky side hill and then it got really steep, really rocky and had about 6"-8" of silt. THIS KICK MY ARSE big time.
And after a few blown corners and a couple trips over the handle bar I was DONE! I didn't care if we were only 30 yards from the top I was not climb the rest of the way out. So I decided to turn it around and go back down the gnarly, rocky, loose, and silty beast that I just spent a few hours trying to climb out of. I was so worked after we got back to 157 that I just wanted to hit the main road back at the Sandy Baker pass and took the road back in to Tibble fork. Overall a GREAT ride.

Now for the bike, it faired a lot better then I did. Ran pretty good but couldn't idle worth a damn and struggled a bit on the bottom end, but what can you expect from a stock bike. I definitely saw a need to jet it and I am looking forward to the air mixture screw and the re gear as well. The stock tires hooked up real well but I will need a new rear tire soon. As I tore this one up pretty good on the first ride. The bike still is in great shape but I did manage to knock a little of that new shine off it.:D

Moral of the story, Stay away from trail 38. Or at least if you are going to ride it drop down it from the top of 157 near rock springs and don't try and climb out of it because it really sucked. But if any of you do ride that trail and tear it up. Then more power to you.

the wide ratio bikes do much much better climbing the slow rocky less-then-fun stuff at AF, but i had to sell the 450X cuz the wife was clucking:mad:....and keep the race 450 cuz its so dang fun at the dunes, the X was a turd at WOT with such high load resistance

lets work on that idle thing this saturday if you doo show up:o, we plan to arrive at lil sahara around noonish on sat, ride all day, drink all night, ride most of the next day, my phone on works near the vendor area of on top of sand mtn

grab a fuel mix screw from a dealer or rocky mtn, or check and see if you have a variable fuel mix screw already, my CR450 came with one but it only gets 2 turns before it falls out, the aftermarket ones can get 6 or more full turns, and the real name for a fuel fix screw is "variable pilot jet" IMO;)...i also got a a few pilot and main jet pilots in the trailer if you need them, if memory serves the yami use a mush smaller pilot jet then a honda, or atleasst my 03 yami did???

Glad I didn't know you were going to AF. I would have offered to tag along. I wish someone would document the technical difficulty of each trail up there. I ride a lot with my wife and don't know that area all that well. I am scared to death I will get her in a situation that is compromising to her enjoyment. Good to hear all went well. I don't know anyone that liked the first ride on a new bike. tweek tweek. Oh yeah, any pics? I bet not, single track is tough to stop and capture the moment.
