2 riders missing north of Halfway (rescued)

We have 2 riders from Wallowa that rode over from the Salt Creek snowpark that are missing north of Halfway someplace sense Sat 01/26.

A guy about 55 and a young man about 18. They were last seen at the Clear Creek cabin about 02:30 on Sat.

We tried all day to get into the CC cabin but there is over 4 feet new snow with as much a 2 feet more expected tonight and we could not get through. Hoping that they holed up in the cabin as they did not have much survival gear with them.:face-icon-small-sad

Search and rescue is working in from both sides and praying for the best.

Let ya know as things change.

S/R will be headed out again at 7:30am this morning. The lost sledders were last talked to at the cabin around noon on Sat. by a couple of our guys. From there we dont know if they were able to get out of the cabin or went back when things turned to white-out cond. Lots of snow and very hard to get around. Prayers and more prayers that they are at the cabin.

Found!

I just got a call that they found both men. The older man was able to make it to the cabin when they got separated on Sat. The younger man stay under a tree for 2 night's. They were still on the mountain and were awaiting a helicopter to get the younger man out. Might be some frost-bite, but not sure.

Yep they found them

They got the young man down to the Clear Creek snowpark at about 3:45 this afternoon and he is on his way to the Baker city Hospital.

They found him this morning when they were able to get to the top of sugarloaf where he had been stuck for 2 nights.

The older rider made it to the Clear Creek cabin and was doing fine when they spoted him during a flyover of the area by a S&R plane early this morning.

They had got seperated Sat, during a whiteout blizzard, near the top of Sugarloaf. The kid got his sled stuck in some rocks near the top and when the other rider tried to go look for him his sled run out of gas so he stayed at the cabin.

The kid did have a space blanket, matches and candles and dug in near his sled and waited. When they found him he stood up waving at them and then collapsed. He had sever hipothermia and they don't think he could have made it through the day.

They called in life flight from Boise but by the time they got to the mountain heavy fog had rolled in and the could not land. they did find an opening in the clouds and tried to land put the pilot did not like the conditions and had to lift off.

Our guys had some extra gas with them and gave it to the other rider and he is on his way back to Wallowa with some friends.

Lets hope that the kid has a 100%:sun: recovery. This story could have ended a lot worse.

Glad to hear the outcome was good. Good job to all that helped in the search, here is a :beer; for all your efforts. Too many times people focus on what the riders should have done differently, I am sure they have learned something from this adventure and don't need to be reminded of the things they should have done. Thank you to all of you that go out and help look for people that have had to spend the night in the woods.

Great points Tedd...we can learn from their mistakes later. For now, just be thankful they made it off the hill and keep them in your thoughts.
