2012 RMK 600 - subtle upgrades

I figured I would start a small build thread for my 2012 RMK 600 sled.

Engine

  • Carls Cycle 660 big bore kit
  • SLP air intake
Body

  • RSI 5" riser and RSI pad
  • Polaris white hand gaurds
  • Low black windshield
  • White skid plate
  • Extreme front bumper
  • Tether
  • WRP gauge lifter
  • DIY tunnel wrap
  • DIY vents
  • DIY headlight cover

Picked up my new sled about 6 weeks ago.

Brought it home and put some of my old accessories on.

  • Sno Bunje tunnel bag
  • Gas rack

Installed Polaris Extreme bumper

Bought some perforated white vinyl for the headlight. Installed skid plate, hand gaurds, and tether. Also drilled 3/16" holes in the ski bottoms so water doesn't stay pooled up.

Removed tunnel accessories and prepped surface for tunnel wrap. Installed black matte on top of the tunnel.

  • Removed rear bumper
  • Removed running board support rail.

Started laying the white vinyl on the sides.

Covered the mfg stickers on the tunnel with blue masking tape before laying the vinyl.

image21.jpg

Painted the running board support rails black.
image23.jpg

Made some templates for the footwell vents.
image24.jpg

I bought some Mo Flow vents but decided to try my luck at making my own vents.

Mocking up some new subtle templates for the side panels. I also have a template for the bottom portion of the panel.

Made some templates for the gas tank shroud and installed the running board support rails.

Here's how it sits currently.

Things left to do:

  • Pick up my ABS plastic and adhesive today and then start making vents. Decide any final last changes to vent designs.
  • Install 660 kit as soon as it arrives (next week). Install SLP air intake.
  • Install Carls clutching.
  • Decide whether or not to put my Ruffian grips and RSI 45* bar ends on the handlebars.
  • Install rear bumper.
  • Use a manual pop rivet gun to get the last two rivets near the footwell on my running board support rails.
  • Add prefilter material to the existing factory hood vents.

That thing is going to be awesome. What can you expect for hp, out of the 660 kit?

It should be a good runner, I'm pretty excited to get it back together and get it on the snow. Also looking forward to the stock exhaust note (previous sled was a TD8). I'm sure eventually it will get a SLP pipe and can once Carls tests them and gets the fuel mapping for the 660.

HP numbers? Good question, never bothered to ask since my last 660 ran so good in my '07.

Thanks for the comments guys. I just cut out most of my vents last night out of ABS plastic. I will continue to work on them tonight and snap some pics.

Worked on my footwell and side panel vents last night.

Had to make the footwell vent a 2 piece vent to fit in the footwell.

One after the cut (razor blade) and one before.

Made a template for the correct angles on the side panel.
image8.jpg

Bent the ABS plastic using a vice, 2x4's, and a heat gun.

More to come - need to test the adhesive and mesh/prefilter material on scrap pieces now.

Worked on making a fixture for holding the mesh tight.

032.jpg

4 different size mesh - biggest to smallest. Not sure what size to go with. The other vents I purchased in the past use the biggest, might just use that one.
033.jpg

Different size hole saws for drill out the vents and side panels.

Drew out the holes on the ABS plastic

Put mesh into the fixture

Bottom side - I might add two additional 2x4's to the sides to stretch the mesh out in all directions.

Great Job

So my curiosity is up, why a 600 RMK, and not the Pro, I own the same sled minus the "subtle upgrades" :face-icon-small-win. And why a 660 rather than an 800? No one that I know of does that around here. I understand the 660 build back in '07 when we couldn't get bigger displacement?

I also own a '11 800 RMK, but am really excited to see how you build turns out and performs.

Please keep the pics and info coming.

Good questions:
1. Why a standard RMK and not a Pro? Well, for one I don't care for the Pro Taper bars. I don't like having the controls on the gas tank console. I wanted a full snow flap for cooling as well as the extra bogie wheels.

2. Why not a 800? My previous sleds were 2009 RMK 800 and 2009 TD8. I thought the 800 has piss poor fuel mappings and seemed to be problematic. After going to the dealer and telling them that there is still a mid range bog and them saying "we can't do anything, everything checks out good," it just left a sour taste in my mouth. With that said, their 600's and 700's have always been rock solid and good runners. Everyone seems to have a 800cc sled, which is fine, but I wanted something that is a little bit of a sleeper.

My buddy has a '11 Pro RMK 800 so I should be able to compare the two sleds and report back.

Cleaned up the vent corners with the belt sander last night.

Broke out the heat gun and form fitted the tank console vents.

I chose to try two different approaches in attaching the mesh to the ABS plastic. First way was to cut out the mesh and loosely attach the two. Second way was to use the fixture I built with stretched mesh. I have a feeling they will come out the same in the end.

With the 3M adhesive, they recommend putting the adhesive on both items before attaching. I did that for 80% of the vents, kind of messy doing it this way. The last two vents, I just applied the adhesive to the ABS plastic.

Tonights project - glue on the Chiffon (tight prefilter mesh) on the pto side vents. Make a new vents for the stock skinny vents (2"x8"). Drill out the holes in the sled.

Nice job on the vents.I like how you made the smaller side panel ones.I would like those. I dont want to cut a big hole in my side panels.

Looks awesome! Looking forward to seeing the completed project, I am a 600 guy myself.

First, huge compliments on your vent work!!

I will be following your reports closely. I wanted to switch to the Pro chassis but couldn't get over my concern with the 800 motor.

Again, great work and keep the updates coming!

Thanks, I got the vents finished up this weekend and installed them.

Marked my inside vents for the foam cut.

Cut some holes in the side panels. I cleaned up the edges with a razor blade to get the burrs off. I left the two small holes uncut. I didn't want to take away the structural integrity of the panel hinges/fingers.
image3-2.jpg

As soon as the drill bit broke through the side panel, I cut holes in "reverse" direction on the drill. I think it leaves a cleaner cut.

Hoping to get the top end this week from Carls Cycle. I also have a crankshaft oil seal to replace on my car as well. I think the garage will see some elbow grease regardless of the project(s).

looks good! whats next on the sled besides the top end? either way props i like the 600.

I think I'm pretty much done for the season buying extras for the sled. I am still waiting for SLP to release their pipe/can combo for the 600's and then I will have to wait until Carls tests the pipe and fuel mapping. I don't know if I want to drop $685 on their pipe/can combo though.
