Living in Seattle Area

I went to go visit my parents this past weekend in Kirkland and really loved the area.

Where do all the sledders live in the Seattle area? I assume it is similar to Denver (we all live outside the city).

How far to the riding areas? My Dad ski patrols at Snoqualmie (sp?) and says it's 50 min from his house in Kirkland.

Next question is the job market. I know it's bad. My sister is most likely moving from Denver to the Seattle Area. She pretty much has a job offer with an Ad agency.

I'm not too worried about finding a job for me but my GF who is a molecular biologist and also recently got a masters in International Policy. I am a Biz Dev Consultant for start-ups and I know Washington has a lot more of that than Colorado.

North Bend is the Gunnison (sp) of Seattle and the home of the famous. 25 min from sledding and skiing and 30 min from Seattle. The key here is commute to work but not to play or traffic will take it out of you. Get as close to I-90 as you can!!

The worst places for a sledder are Ballard, Magnolia, West Seattle, Seattle, Mill Creek, Redmond, Woodenville, Renton, and yes, Kirkland! The traffic from those city's to the mountains can and will be dreadful if you plan to ride mid week and after work.

Job market sucks period and the state is run by a bunch of idiots. Good Luck.

Tell him how you really feel!:D

East of Issaquah is preferred. Only about 30 - 40 minutes on I-90 to the pass, or first riding areas. Many more the further down the road you want to go.

The Redmond area can be a pain if you are to the west of 202 (Redmond / Woodinville road)

Areas along SR18 are pretty good. Housing is much more affordable, just depends upon where you are going to be working from. The main traffic flows are north and south. The east to west travel isn't too bad as long as you are not by any of the lakes / water. Lake Washington / Lake Sammamish... Congestion areas tend to be to the north and south of those locations.

Bellevue isn't too bad, depending upon where you live.

Oh, and don't move to fall city. It doesn't even have a stop light! lol

^^^^^^ lol at Gravy.

He speaks the truth. Just read the WA section for a couple of days. You'll move to Florida in a flash....

If you go N of Seattle there is alot of riding....Baker, Whistler.....
S there is more good riding around St Helens.
Just avoid the core of the city....North Bend is like the San Francisco of Wa....a nice area close to sledding but you have to put up with the alternative lifestyle croud, I hear they even have their own parade and mountain climbing club.

Funny I remember a pm from you asking us to find you a place to live in NB.

no kidding...just lurking in Washinton has kept me from wanting to visit the west side.

I grew up in New Jersey and spend 7 years in NYC so traffic and weird people don't bother me.

I probably will only be alble to ride on weekends and 2 hour day drives to the mtns are not a big deal for me.

Also being 34 years old and no kids i want to live in an area with some good restraunts and such.. more of the yuppie crap.

Snoqualmie is like what I envision Vail Pass to be like... lots of user conflict. There are lots of sledding areas accessible from anywhere in the Seattle area. If you are a weekend and occasional mid-week rider location shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I live north of Seattle and ride a bunch of different areas. On weekend mornings from where I live Mt.Baker/Schreibers Meadow is a no-stop 1.5 hr drive. Salmon la Sac/Gallagher is appx 3hrs (and worth every minute of the drive). Bear Paw is 2hrs. Blewitt Pass 2.5hrs.

I work a M-F 9to5 job and if I'm not feeling well on a bluebird midweek day I'd just as soon be at Mt.Baker as anywhere else in the world.

No one has metioned this so I get to. Your biggest concern will be lack of blue skies. Colorado is blessed with pretty much the opposite kind of weather we have. For every bluebird day you have there we have gray sock-ed skies. Many other people have made this adjustment before you though. When you get your job just make sure to let them know when there are blue skies in the winter you'll be taking your mental health days.

Oh yeah, what are your summer hobbies. That could also help us guide you to a good location to live.

Every time I flush I think of Fall City!!!!!!!!
I would think flushing would remind you of something else....Something lacking in your life...!

That's something you'll be proud to tell your grandkids you did when you were young long after hiking becomes outlawed because of claims of damage to the environment by leaving footprints on the snow and rocks.

Graveler will have to tell someone else's grandkids because being Gay, he wont be able to produce offspring that he doesn't just wipe and flush afterwards.

Nice soap guys...as handy as soap on a rope......without the rope!

As Kordero already mentioned, The weather here sucks.
I spent a year living in Northglenn Co and looking back on it I wish I'd had a sled back then (or lived there now)
I know there is little work there so I understand the reason for the move but if you live for the winter like most of us do here then you will REALLY MISS the deep powder and blue skies you get in Co.
Our white crap that falls rozen from the sky is called Cascade Concrete for a very good reason.

Powder is EXTREMELY rare here on the Left Coast.
(but when we get it its awesome!)
