ordered a 2010 rmk. looking at shock options. looking for opinions on what works. have it narrowed down to two set ups. any insight would be great. i had assault needles and .375 torsions in the rear of my 07 and liked it.
best bang for the buck?

1. walker needle fronts from tri city and walker assault needles on the rear.
or
2. carls zero pros front and carles zero pros rear.

anyone try carls set up with the float in the center? any good. also what torsion for a geared up 230 lb rider .375 or .405? do the .405s rub the idler wheels?

thanx for your input

Both are VERY dialed in for the chassis... the Walker from TCP has the benefit of having dual rate springs and a compression adjustable piggyback on them.

Carls AND Max at TCP have taken the time to make these right for the chassis and have the experience to dial them in for your weight and style.

I prefer the ZeroPros but will admit that the Walkers on the Assault are nice shocks.

I'd buy which ever were cheapest.

cost is close to the same. not sure on the float center from carl. chris said he had some zero centers left. i think id rather have the coilover in the center. mh what would you recommend on torsions? also like the adjustabilaty of the walker fronts. but good reports from guys with the zero pros

Both vendors are top notch...which is rare in this world.

Whatever you choose, stick with the same "system" front and rear for the best service.

As far as the torsion springs go....

Stock Torsion Spring .359/77 degree
Light Torsion Spring .347/77 degree
Heavy Torsion Spring .375/77 degree # 7041942 & # 7041943 (L&R)

"Big Boy" .405/77 degree #7041940 & 7041941 (L&R)

Being a light rider myself... I really dont have any hands-on input for you...

There are others out there that are more qualified to answer this one.

I have Zero Pros from Carl's (front and rear). Great shock, great price, great dealer support. I also run the heavy torsion springs. I weigh 225 naked so put all of the gear and pack on and I am sure that I am pushing 250 lbs. ready to ride. They work great. I put the preload position in the middle. I had this setup transferred from my 08 D8 that was ported, etc. to my 09 Boondockers Pump Gas Turbo D8. I rode it at Snowbank on may 30th. Everything worked great and handled the additional power of the turbo with no problem whatsoever. Now you know what I know. Good luck.

The walker needles have the advantage of being position sensitive, allowing them to get much stiffer towards the end of travel, while remaining compliant through most of the travel. The zero pros don't offer any position sensitive capabilities. The other advantage of the walkers is that they have a 5/8" dia shaft versus the 1/2" of the zero pros. This should prove to be stronger, although it will have slightly higher seal drag.

Just wondering if another option had popped up since this thread was around. I'm leaning towards the Walker needles to match the Assault shocks I have on the rear, maybe for an extra $10 they'd make them show up on my credit card statement as "charitble donation to starving blind kids from Zimbabwaye"? Nah, she'd never believe that...

:mad:Take all Waker F*****´(cowboy) shocks and smash them with a hammer..
use about any other shocks is better...
Airs/Floats are cool looking/Hi-Tech and lightweight...
but every other day a customer come in furios with a blown shock
you just wanna go home.....
OK Shocks can be sent away around different local shock healers...
Fabcraft,tri-city or whatever...but should it be that way with hi-tech equipment...NO

Remember this:a shock with a spring keeps its ride height even if blown or
malfunction...You wont even notice it in the deep !!!
But try to ride an Assault out of the baddest backcountry riding
on the belly is not the easiest..
My Choice would Be Öhlins: all F1,CART;MX,Motogp,WRC even NASCAR uses them Second of choice: FOX ZERO pros,And then
FOX FLOATS with a pump so you can tune them.

IQ?... You bring up a great point that a coil spring shock will keep it's ride height if blown... which is not the case for an air shock with a blown air camber or leaking shaft seal.

Do not confuse the Walker Evans "Air" shocks, which are standard on the Dragons, with the Walker Evans Coil-Spring Needle shocks which are included in the topic of this post.

The Walker Evans Coil-Spring Needle piggyback are the same design as the podium winning shocks on the IQ-Racer for the last 6 years...the difference is in the length, spring rates, and valving.

The Walker Evans Needle shocks, the Fox Zero Pro Shocks ARE Coil Spring shocks as are the Ohlins.:face-icon-small-hap

I really like the quality of Ohlins which were great on my Ducati. In fact the machining work on the Ohlins is industry standard! :)

The shock is only as good as the valving and spring choices...

I'm not aware of any volume suppliers that have a lot of seat time and tuning on the Ohlins for the long track RMK's in all their different variations.

Both Coil Spring shocks in discussion here....the Fox Zero Pro's from Carls and the Walker Evans Needle shocks are custom valved and dialed in for this chassis, and the tuners have experience with all of the differnt versions of the RMK's.

The Fox Zero-Pro Coil-Spring shock from Carls is a Coil Over custom shock that costs about $560 for the pair, has single rate springs, 1/2" shafts, standard IFP design (no piggyback and no compression adjustment).

The Walker Evans Coil-Spring Needle Shock from Tri City Performance cost about $650, have dual rate springs, 5/8" shafts, Piggyback reservioir design with compression "clicker" adjustment and position sensitivity.

Two different prices, two different options. Both great shocks set up by people who know how to valve/spring shocks.

The new 2010 Assaults already come with the Premium Walker Evans Coil-spring shocks...but they dont benefit from the dual rate springs or the custom valving that the Aftermarket Walker Evans shocks have from Tri City.

The Assault and IQR Walkers Needle Coil-spring are too long and not valved/sprung correctly for the Dragon sleds...For those that are thinking of the swap.

This is the Walker Evans Coil-Spring Needle shock shown with the stock single rate spring on a 2009 Dragon SP.

Hello MH.
Yes i know the difference from Needle Coil overs to Air`s
Here in sweden Öhlin shocks are easy to get...Expensive thou.
They are available for all Poo,Doo,Cat,Yam sleds.
In Europe even Lynx.
In the European Snowcross circuit-no racer runs the
walkers on IQs They swap to Öhlin directly...
Have you tested an Öhlin equipped sled??
The difference to walkers is so big no one could belive
it if not tested...
The walkers are stiff and bouncy and when you
go big they go all to the bottom with a bang...
Öhlins are soft thru the first inches of travel
yet hard and can handle big airs and flat landings.
And they dont break down ll the time.

Like I said earlier... the Ohlins are great shocks...No doubt about it... they are top notch quality...Expensive like you said.

"Stiff and bouncy" is a POORLY set up shock, valved incorrectly and not adjusted well...More the Crew Cheif problem than a mfg problem... Properly setup is evident especially after watching Ross Martin win races on the factory WE needle shocks.

So... To keep this thread from drifting... lets keep it on topic with Zeros and Needles.

Mountain calbration with valving guarante... Walker and Fox are easy to find and very affordable.

I have personally been on the RMK's with both the Zeros and WE Needle shocks... Both are top notch offering that perform at a high level.

The part that makes these 2 shocks we are talking about so good is that the shops that sell them calibrate the valving and spring choices for the sled they are going into

As a side note, I'm on the Fox EVOL X's .... great shocks but lots of coin that you can get 90% of the performance out of lesser priced shocks IMO.
