09 M 1000 blowing belts any Ideas?????

I have 2 rides on 09 m1000 total of 120 miles and I have already toasted 2 belts does any body have any ideas why this is happening and maybe how to prevent it. by the way on the last belt I was pounding trail when it blew and when I went to change it the clutches were to hot to even touch. so is venting what i need to look at. my dealer says that it is to much snow on clutches from stock vents. I really don't thinks so. Ideas would be great. thanks in advance.

A couple of things come to mind....

If it's a new sled, did the dealer set it up properly? Ie: confirm proper clutch alignment & offset?

Did you wash the release residue off the belts?

Did you break in the belts? -at least 10 miles of EASY riding before any climbs, deep powder or high speeds!

Putting vents in the side panels REALLY helps keep 'em cool.

Gearing the sled down also helps.

I have a D&D 1200 and I can't hold it wide open for very long or I start pulling cords out the side of the belt. I'm at below 500' and tried M8 gearing but that didn't help. We are thinking that I run out of gear right away and I'm pulling the belt all the way down in the driven and its cutting a grove in the belt?? I'm going to try 65/55 (1.90 ratio) and see what that does. Hell...I can spend $199 on belts and I know whats going to happen or spend it on gears and maybe it will help? I put a set of 90gram heavy tip weights in it and I can pull 8K so I know I'm making good power.

I do not run a cat,,,,,bbbbbuuuuuutttt heat is always related to slippage...how about going up to a stiffer spring in the sec. clutch??????WhAT HELIX DO YOU RUN?????mAYBE TTTTOOOOO STEEEEP

Venting will def help, but not the solution. You MUST keep the belt from slipping in order to go forward, you can't allow heat to build up...................jmho

Side vents helped me on my 08. I went through 3 or 4 belts. I was breaking them in and washing them the sled was set up correctly. So after trying the 046 and the 060 I bought a set of side vents. Never blew another belt the rest of the winter and the clutches stayed much cooler. This year I'm running lower gears as well. I wanted to keep as much snow off the clutches as well I only put 7 -2" holes in that side instead of cutting out the whole side panel. You can always put more holes in.

Okay guys thanks for the info. I am running the recomened belt from cat. 060. I have washed all belts and broke them in the way I was told, the last belt I rode 20-25 miles on the trail with a perfect break in. I took the sled in to dealer and he made sure that everything was correct in the allignment deparment. I have done everything correctly. except when the dealer told me to block my vents, I hesitate to do so because of the heat that these sled hold in, plus when I poped the hood to change the last belt there was no signs of moisture around clutches or in the area, so I don't think I am getting slipage from that. The heat is what has got me concerned. What pisses me off is you buy a new sled and the stupid thing is suppose to be abel to run with no mods and cat and the dealer are not willing to try anything to remedy the problem. I think I am going to start venting and go from there. but more info is always great. thanks guys.

1000

GEAR it down

you must ditch the horrible helix set up GO WITH A BDX conversion helix and be able to adjust spring tension while riding.......MUST DO THIS

Check for cracked motor mounts, the mag side seems to be the worst issue, also check the lower mount which is above the belly pan. Cat has changed the part number 3 times for the pto mount, perhaps they realize that there is a problem?

the factory alignment is garbage. if you keep pulling threads on the same side of the belt isn't it plainly obvious you have an alignment problem? alighn in yourself. do a search on here and you'll find your answer on how.

One thing comes to my mind.............

Try a diferant dealer! Someone is missing somthing here. A stock sled should be able to keep a belt on it. I would ask the dealer to start warranting the belts. Also ask the dealer to call the factory techs for some advise. Good Luck -00's

00's he has been giving me belts. If you have any suggestions on what dealer to talk to I would like to have the number.

Jop: do you have timbersled phone number.

so this is what I am going to start with. I order complete set of frog skin vents except for side vents. went with 2 cool air vents for those. I also order 4 more flo rites to place in different locations. i also plan on taking the drill to several different location. if any one has any other ideas please post want to figure this out. even though I am getting free belts, it suck when you ride 40 miles out to get to the step and deep and a belt blows. so do try to ride on the only spare you brought or do you limp a long for the rest of day? sounds like a pile of facking fun. I suppose I could take 3 or 4 belts with me and finish the day out.
thanx every one

venting is helping!!!!

okay guys and gals?

Prelim results on venting: I rode yesterday hard for about 50 miles. checked clutches every once in a while for heat and belt wear. Remember i have only been getting about 40 miles on a belt before this. The clutches are still getting hot but not any wear near what they were. belt seems to be fine no signs of threads or rubber coming off like the other belts. I am still concerned with the heat in the clutches. I know that they should get wharm. I know that I am getting clutch heat but I don't think that is the only reason. while putting my vents on I noticed several things. anti-freez resavor and cap melted, oil resavor and cap melted, all the hood insulation burnt until crispy, plastic shroud where knees rest if you were sitting are wharpping and starting to melt. so my question is how much clutch heat am I really getting and how much of the heat is excessive motor temp. SO my questions is why is the 09 1000 running so hot?

Here is what I did for venting: 2.5 inch flo-rite in shock tower,2.5 inch flo-rite in plastic right above foot well. I drilled 130 wholes in belt cover from one end to the other. drilled all the wholes in the alum. between clutch and foot well bigger and added more wholes. 2 cool side vents on both sides. I also cut the vents open bigger right where your knees are if you were sitting on the sled.

so I have looked at all re gearing post. what gears should I think about putting in.

Now I am by far a clutching guy, (I mean I know nothing about it) I know how to change weights and springs but don't really know what springs does what and what helix does what. so any help on clutching would be great. any ideas will be very help ful.

thank you guys for your help.

I know that this subject has been a beaten horse but I need help and really don't like what my dealer has to say!
