homemade air intake?

sorry no pics but i just gutted the hood side of the plenum, enlarged the hole in the top of the stock airbox, made a prefilter to fit it. also installed 4 univents in the top of the airbox. the univents are 1 inch round vents that are used to help vent atv airboxes, they come with a screen and foam filter. made a heat shield for the bottom of the headlights with 1/32 aluminum. i run a speedwerx bra on the front 2 hood holes, also have pet screening on the front 4 hood holes to keep the snow out. figured this would almost double the available air, give me about a 50% increase in airflow under the hood. which will hopefully help keep the underhood temps a little lower. invested $9 for the univents, $10 for the aluminum, already had the prefilter material. on the top of one side of the plenum is a small factory prefilter, i used the push pins from this and a sealing ring i made from plastic to hold the prefilter in place this way you can easily remove it for cleaning. a little foam around the bottom of the sealing ring and for about 20-$30 and a little time your set. i'll snap some pics today and post them tonite. i do have a pic of the bra.

good deal, thanks sandman! I hate to be a cheapskate, but i've got two little ones and a wife that stays home with them, so i have to be a penny pincher at times! thanks again

Can you get some pics of the bottom side of the headlights, how it's blocked off and what you did for additional intake venting to the stock plenum under the lights?

Self Made Sno Pro Box

I Took My Stock Air Box Out & If You Look At It There Are Lines In The Top
That Resemble A Triangle's On The Top. I Drilled Holes In The Corners To Leave A Rib Of Material Around The Out Side & Two Ribs That Are The
Dividers Down The Center Of The Box. I Took A Jig Saw & Cut The Top Out Of The Box & Cleaned Up The Fuzzys With An Exacto Knife Then I Bought
A SLP Part # 14-253 18X18 Pre Filter Sheet & Used Weather Strip Adhesive
& Glued It To The Box. Make Sure To Overlap It Just A Little.
Then After Its Dry 15-20 Min I Took My Electric Stapler & 1/4 Inch Stapples
And Stappled The Edges Down & Cut Off The Extra. Then Take The Extra
& Pull Out Your Front Screen In The Hood & Cut A Piece Of Flow Rite To Fit
The Hood Opening & Put The Screen & Clips Back In The Hood So When Hood Is Closed Pre Filter Is Out Front I Have My M7 & M1000 & 5 Freinds Of Mine
Built Like This & They All Love Them Also On Mine The 7 Has Twins & 1000 Has A Single & I Cut Holes In The Side & Front Of My Box & I Have Some Stock Air Intake Screens In The Nose Cone Like Chris Burandts To Get More Air In The Nose 4 FT & I Have Looked Like A Mole & No Bog

I just finished mine... I will work on getting pics in the next week or so.
I left the stock box in the belly pan alone.
I removed the plenum or box completetly from the hood.
I used just less than a foot of dryer hose in place of the stock rubber boot just off the airbox so it can flex when opening and closing the hood... Surprisingly it makes a 90 degree bend without restricting the opening.
I then used 4inch diameter semi rigid ducting the rest of the way under the hood and exiting through the stock speedo hole location attatched with a couple zip ties.
You can use dryer hose for the entire length, but the ducting looks better and is more durable.
The ducting is sealed off on both sides of the speedo hole with silicone.
I then removed the stock intakes from the hood and covered using 1/4 inch hardware cloth and pet screen... The hardware cloth makes a strong enough barrier and the pet screen keeps the snow out... I did the same in the headlight area after removing the headlights and attached with fasteners in place of the windshild push pins and also used the existing holes from the headlight to attatch... I also used a couple zip ties instead of drilling any extra holes to attatch the pet screen/harware cloth.
Obviously I relocated the speedo... Currently it is attatched to my windshield bag and bag is still functional... Depending on visibility I may re-locate with a bracket later on.
I then found a plastic box (hair clipper plastic box) aproximately 8 inches X 8inches and 3 or so inches deep. I gutted it and cut the handle off... I then traced the intake openings in the hood to a piece of cardboard and cut them out... Positioned them on the box so both would fit and cut the openings out on the box and drilled a hole for the push pin... Now the stock intakes are installed in the face of the box and sealed with silicone.
Backup: Before installing air duct in speedo opening I temporarily mounted the box over the speedo hole location and traced the speedo hole opening to the back of the box and cut out as well as drilled 2 holes to rivet the box to the hood.
I had an extra flowrite, so I drilled and mounted it to the back upper corner of the box... So the box can draw air from the front 2 stock intakes as well as the flowrite in the back of the box... Box sits pretty vertical, so snow should not pack around it.
At this point the box still opens, so I placed it over the intake duct opening in the stock speedo location, rivited it in place and sealed it off with silicone around the intake duct.
At this point I simply ran a bead of silicone around the edges of the box and closed it... Ran a small bead around the outer seam and sealed the openings from where I cut off the handle.
Now the speedo location is a sub air box with more than stock surface area for air flow and should not get plugged off in deep snow.
Last year I ran the same set-up with a pod filter in place of the "box" and it worked OK, but was a trade off between surface area and handlebar clearance... I think this "box" will work much better.
Hopefully you can visualize this, if not, like I said... I will work on getting pics.
Very inexpensive/lightweigh and functional.
Pet screen 8-10 bucks roll will do multiple sleds
1/4 inch hardware cloth 12 bucks... Will also do multiple sleds
dryer hose 6 bucks
Semi rigid duct 8 bucks
silicone/a couple fasteners and acouple zip ties 5 bucks.

is a fuel box recommended with this type of mod? 2 to7000 feet

No, I am not changing anything from the air horn to the throttle bodies.
This system should be the same as a non obstructed stock system... Meaning the main advantage is not blocking off intake in deep pow.
I have parts to install a larger opening airhorn, but I'm not sure If I will need more fuel at that point.
I will try to get pics by the end of the week.

sorry it took so long but got a couple of pics for ya. took this out sunday and put 60 miles on it. worked perfectly, the underhood temps seemed better, will have to wait for some deep pow to see how much better...

Hey Sandman, Looks very simple and easy to do. I'm just wondering about pulling hot air from inside the hood. Keep us posted on how it runs in deep pow.

sucking hot air from inside the hood is why i've waited so long to do this. figured you'd get more power from sucking cold air from outside, but finally decided if the underhood temps are getting too hot must be losing hp from that so i hope it is at least an even trade. have several friends running pods with no probs, i'm just 2 cheap to spend the 200-$300 for a couple of filters. figure the engine sucking cold air now into the hood, and all the extra openings for air to flow, should be a good thing...

should be fine, just think how much air the engine takes it can't possibly heat it up as fast as it is using it. the first stab of the throttle will have some hot air, but after the first little bit its all good.

THat's why you get a grip of vents when you buy a Timbersled kit....let the cold air in so you can suck cold air in the intake....I built my own for like $50, not cheap looking, looks pretty sweet actually if I do say so myself.

I was just finishing up a few items in prep. for the new snow, found some pics so I thought I'd add them to this sled in hopes to help...here's what we've created....We'll gladly build on up for anyone who wants one, we have some material left.
