Wow - How many rounds per minute is that? 5000? I bet it's at least that much!! Damn
It looks like the GAU - 8 avenger, which is the main cannon used in the A-10 Warthog. Some interestingl facts about this gun:
1) It is the most poweful cannon in the US Military
2) The structural design of the A-10 is actually built around the gun
3) The cannon and ammo represents 16% of the total aircraft weight.
Also, if I remember right this gun produces enough recoil that the A-10 can on shoot it in 2 second burst every 10 seconds or so, or it risks falling out of the sky (that may be urban legend, but I can't find anything on it). Also, the shorter bursts increase the barrel life.
The navy uses a system called a Phalenx (sp?).
It is an anti-aircraft/anti-missil defence system.
The whole purpose of this system is to put so much lead out that the plane/missil actually runs into the bullets.
When it fires you can't tell on round from the next. When it fires it sounds like a cow mooing.
There is an arch of casings coming out of the side of it. It is so freeking cool.
When you look at modern navy ships, if you see this thing with a white dome on top of a gun, that is the system. It is computer controlled and fires automatically.
If it is the GAU, the maxiumum RPM is 4200.
I followed Animule's link and according to the site the gun can either fire at a rate of 3000 or 4500. Wowza!
