Back Country Freeride Comp/Fun Day 2009.

I am thinking about getting a bunch of people together and mabey host a little competition In Elkford B.C. In feburary 2009. Thinking about the 17,18th(saturday and sunday).

Elkford Is about 45 mins from The Crowsnest Pass and Fernie.

I just want to see how many people would be interested in coming out and having a chance to win some Dough and have a good time sledding! Move through out the basins setting wicked high marks, drops and jumps, boondocking, what ever.

Mabey like $40 per person to enter and we'll move from basin to basin through the day ,and best climb and wreck or something for prizes. possibley a few more depending on how many people want to compete. or just show up to have a good day of riding.

I just want to see how many people would be interested.

Turnout

As long as a few members on here seem willing i'll spread the word more. i think we can get at least 50 competitors.

Everyones gotta join in and promote this event to, Spread the word.

Also if you have any better recomendations for dates.

If there is enough interest I may try and rent the union hall for the night and have a sledders get-to-gether to hand out prize money, Also I may ask dealers around here to donate some prizes and come out and have a fun day.

If people have tow tobagans and small tool sets or chainsaws we may need to get a few of those, set up a camp and have a fire and what not. Barbeque.

So the plan looks like.

Saturday, Meet at honkey camp at 10am. move through all 4 main basins and areas on saturday. Either saturday night or sunday afternoon hand out the cash and prizes. If sunday, we'll have time to get a few more sick lines and hit another basin that is just wyckyd, but a far distance into the narrow trails.

Spread the word.

On the Elkford club site, and BC ATV and snowmobile website i will be posting this up soon, I am get posters nearer to winter ready and get the posted all over the Kooteneys. If you turbo dudes come out and play you'll be bringing home some cash for sure!

I will be riding no matter what that day. even if no one else shows up. But i hope we can get a awesome day of riding and meeting new people next winter. As like you said. like the BIS and BDS when they were smaller.

a mash of everything

pretty much everything. If 50 people compete and $40 each to enter the comp, thats 2000$ of prize money right there.

I think i'll just be the sickest meanest of a few things.

Best Climb
Worst Wreck
Best drop/jump.

and mabey even pul the climbing into cc and turbo classes if enough people become interested.

I've been thinking mabey for judging pick like 3 people who will come both days but not compete vote all the riders on they're pulls and what not. And its a large area. If they decide to go off and do they're own thing get it on take and get the judges to go over it.

Or mabey A ballot box or something with the best stunt of the day, but then it would be hard remembering who did what.

So we need to figure out a judging method to see who gets some cash.

and the reason i used the word "freeride", is because its pretty much a mash up of the Red Bull Fuel And Fury event mixxed with the Big Iron and Big Dawg Shootout. I think the climbing is going to be the main event though. the friday before the event I think i'll go up and make some killer kickers to jump around on.

you have a cat to build the kicks with? do u have any pics of the area u would be holding this event at? what kind of terrain do you have to work with? when you get the posters made you can message me and u can mail them to me though my company. I will put a poster up at all the dealers. you should see if Walthealy would be interested in doing any kind of sponsorship. they are petty big into riding the Fernie area and had a good showing at the Fernie drag races with 5 or 6 turbos.

The Area

I figure we will be riding the Koko Claims Basins. Including, Smith Basin, The Gorge, Tundra, Mear Lake, Secret Lake, And possibly True Koko, if we get the time. Plus any other area you want to throw down your stuff in.
I will make up maps of the area to show the stageing areas and parking lots, hotels, restraunts, gas stations.

The Google earth co-ordinants of the area are.

latitude 50° 5'20.31"N
longitude 115° 1'46.82"W

trail maps with a google earth map package is availible at the ealkford trails website. http://www.elkfordtrails.com/?q=node/101

^^this mountain is right in my backyard pretty much. An Im thinking Sunday I might see how many people want to see if we can get the the top threw the bowl. I've hiked it. And another guy climbed it in late season last year. I think it might be a cool way to end the ride.

Alot of these pictures are taken in late season because my sled was broken till like March 16th. Camera date is wrong, haha.

I'll get these posters up soon probley just to let everyone know its happeneing and to take the days off work and school and save up some gas money!

looks not bad, short on snow tho.
the last 4 pics would be the best places i think, have somthing to try and make it to the top of whats on the other sides of them mountains, anywere to turn around?

snow

those last few pictures were from real early season when the snow was just being blown off the tops. my brother took those in january. in pictre 6 and 7 is actually the best for chutes and technical riding. but all windblown in the bottom of the basin.

Elkford Is the highest, or possibley second highest elevation town in Canada. season is usaualy from late november to early june. in the pictures it doesnt show much of the good clibing spots. those were just pictures i took when i decided to pull out the camera.

1 shop is alreaddy interested in sponsoring the event. and I emailed another.

if i get some time off with these days i would definately come up for it and have some friends who would probably into it as well.

i think what is gonna be key is to make it not just who can climb the highest, but more technical climbs, this helps keep it from being the turbo party. i know and ride with tons of people on 700s-1000s that cant at all hang with turbos but they are still some great riders.

I'd be interested in just going to ride and have some fun. So long as you can get the club or Ghostriders to groom, last year the trails in that area had some rough days.

Don't try and make it bigger than it already is, IMO if you start breaking it into classes, have too many venues etc., its not going to work. Take some sledders, go for a ride, people nominate the best drops, jumps, climbs, etc along the way and it stays simple. If you start having a hill climb compy, that could eat up a day all by itself. Too many riders and you will see it become policed like the BDSO, there will be a trail of garbage in their wake and we will no longer be welcome in these areas. Big events garner big attention, not something we always want depending on the publicity spin.
