Your so called "Dictator" hears far more than you might imagine. And while you sit there and accuse me of Rectal Cranial Inversion, the last time I checked, building a highway usually requires that you rip the road out first, shut it down to traffic and then rebuild it from ground up. Meanwhile everyone is forced into a detour for months and months while the road crew does it's job. That was not an available option for us. So everyone here is suffering from all the "work in progress" and complaining bitterly about the pot holes, dirt, mud, noise, traffic delays, ect..
Traffic will be restored very shortly now, and the speed limit will be quite a bit higher than it was before. Hopefully when you look back on all the trouble, it will have been worth it.

Chris: Tog it might be 6 months before we fix this thing.
Tog: Well thank for being truthful with me chris, keep me abreast of the situation
Chris: no problem Tog

Re: rectal cranial inversion
Lol, first I wish to give you a pat on the back for having a sense of humor. I have been around for quite some time. This site has seen better/faster days, however in comparison to a week ago we are smokin along this week. I agree, it is not as fast as it has been in the past and as is human nature... creates frustration and complaints. I have seen some changes since this has started. I think they will eventually become good. The information that was available here is still available, it takes a little longer but some things are worth the wait. I know how computers roll, sometimes things seem pretty simple and get a little out of hand and by the time it is over the simple conversion cost rediculous $$$ and involved a bunch of people and time... etc. I hope and believe that there is a plan and it will get better.
Good Luck
Ps.... oh yeah get your $$$hit together or we are all leaving..... just kiddin
You know how to keep a complainer from drowning? Take your foot off his head!!!

Consider it this way.
There is no one on SnoWest more than me lately.
And for all the stuff I spend my day doing in the background, I have to wait/suffer from the slowness just exactly the same as everyone else does.
If there is anyone on SnoWest that wants it to SPEED UP, its ME!!

no chance on that one.
I have been saying for some time we were working on the solution, but I have never offered anyone a solid date, because I simply didn't have one.
On Monday I expect to have a ship date for the new hardware. Once I have that in my hot little hand, THEN I will let everyone know that a real solution is inbound.

Christopher,
Welcome to the dialogue. Glad you're acknowledging the performance issue and we don't have to keep changing browsers anymore. Opera and Maxthon seem to be the fastest. 1997 Mosaic is terrible. Firefox is buggy, IE crashes constantly and Safari doesn't support well....almost anything that IE does. Net = browsers are not the issue.
Do you seriously think this is simply and only a CPU/processing/RAM/Disk access aka horsepower issue? Are you running this site on TRS80's?
Don't you have a hint that there may be something oddly wrong with how the application front end works with the database, or the structure of the database, or similar architecture issue?
I fail to see how the number of "registered" users affects site performance - especially if they're not LOGGED IN and just watching from the sidelines.
The original forum (albiet simple) format was working for years and made Snowest what it is today. (yes, both Fusetalk and VBulletin)
I think you should seriously (did I say SERIOUSLY) consider building something along those lines and is eerily similar format to the original version.
It worked well up until the plethora of un-needed changes of the last year.
There's value in improving a product, but there's also value in being a bit conservative in modifying something that already works well!
Good luck with it!
All ribbing aside, we hope you succeed.

Remember, it has always been the members that make this site great, Not the Admin. Just like how the Gov has been destroying our country for years and the O admin seems to be doing it full steam ahead, this new SW Admin I believe to have an agenda to turn this place into a slow, greenie loving, socialist, let's save the world but over look our own issues kinda place.
Wake up Snowesters and notify harris publishing of the damage this new admin has done to this site before it is to late.

Wow! I am just amazed how the similarities keep stacking up. First the O admin wants us the American tax payers to bailout all the losers of this country. Now the SW admin wants us the users to bail them out.
We will be paying for this site by Dec 1 2009 if not sooner. Or at least those who stick around.

I have no problem with paying/contributing for something I use frequently (SW4M), but if they decide to sock the contributors of this site too much, that will ring the death bell for sure...
The content is basically created for free, and Harris uses it to sell advertising, magazines, events, etc..
Seeing how they're very concerned about the large group of users who look, but don't post if they're going to a paid model they should require the lurkers (the larger group) to buy in.
Hope & Change!

There is no thinking on this one.
I know if for an absolute fact and can back up that statement with Server Load Factor that we log every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The server that SnoWest lives on right now, is shared by a dozen other sites.
The new server WILL absolutely positively restore all the speed this forum ever had and then some.

So, the short answer is: YES.
You're confident that this is simply a CPU/RAM/Disk-access issue.
I'm sure you've identified some HW limitation, however it is curious that the performance hit did not appear to users until you started subdividing the subdivided forums and adding all of the bells and whistles, then subdividing them.
Even though dedicated/correct HW is a necessary first step, I think you've got a little more work in front of ya to solve this than just throwing processor cycles at it.
;-)
MD.

This is the SloWest that I have experienced, don't post much but getting kind of impatient with the load cycles. The old forum seemed to work to most peoples satisfaction, I can see trying to make it better with bells and whistles but there is always the point of diminishing returns. New vehicles with all the bells and whistles, emission this, economy that, and then there is my 67 Merc big block, 18 mpg on the highway, produces enough tire smoke to get the tree huggers panties in a knot real quick, burns as clean or cleaner than the newer cracker box cars and you can fix it with a hammer and a monkey wrench! some times it is best to leave well enough alone, just my 2 cents

I just got off the phone with Dell Computers, and I wanted to let all the members of SnoWest know that our long awaited High Speed Data servers are now on the production line and being built for us.
They told me we should have them here in Idaho Falls on or before December 3rd, 23 days from today. He thought in all likely hood we may see them a few days sooner if all goes well.
Once installed ALL speed / performance related issues on SnoWest will be permanently resolved!!
As production updates arrive I will update this thread with further information.

So,
Let me get this straight.
Christopher talks himself into a job with Harris to manage a site that worked fine.
Christopher changes all sorts of stuff on the site, making it pitifully slow.
Now that the site is pitifully slow, he basically forces Harris to pony up for servers.
Now that the money is spent on servers, we hear talk about this becoming a pay site.
Am I missing a step here?
it is UNREAL how one misguided person can screw up a good thing. If the rumor was false about it becoming a pay site, I think he would have hurried to deny such a STUPID idea.
Let's get a round of applause for Christopher, well done.
Anyone that is stupid enough to pay for a forum, good luck getting info from the guys out there that don't need to waste their money on that type of thing, all you'ill get is canned advertisements from the few that think it's worth it to advertise on a site that drove away the majority of its users.

You all would b!tch if you were hung with a new rope. Now get back to work, your boss is watching and tell him to spring for some faster internet, not the dial-up you're on now.

Pay site
Don't know if I'd pay at this point. I belong to a couple others that I pay to access the full meal deal. If the speed thing isn't resolved paying is not an option.
We can be optomistic.... realistically I can't justify paying for frustration. This site has a lot to offer.... I am willing to stick around to see how things turn out, but sooner or later we will all make a decision to leave if it doesn't improve.
If paying to use this site is the issue... then like many other sites, tv stations, radio etc, certain, non-advertising filled pages/locations should exist. There has to be value for the $$$. I generally don't pay for sites filled with advertisements. Yes many sites have generated pop ups.... I will not go to these sites after I have discoverred them... not even if they are free!!! So lets be careful. I am not the only one who feels this way.
Hope to see the new snowest site soon!
D.

NO they did not!
Christopher had a meeting with the "industry experts" and they came up with the changes on their own.
They know exactly where they are headed and exactly where they will end up. Or so I was told.
They are not interested in our feedback. (Unless it is positve and supportive.)

I subscribe to SnowWest & Sled Head too
I pay for your magazines, I did like your Forum site tell you changed it, now it sucks! If I have to pay for this site I'll drop your Magazines and go with something else. Just say the word, I site was OK before you changed it, so change it back. Gary from Bozeman,MT

SO,
this is what happens when you speak out against the supreme leader,
Christopher thought it would be funny to change my name.
I'm not amused.
I also can no longer start threads.
this is the kind of childish crap we're dealing with here.

I can't believe people are still complaining about having to pay a little $. Don't like it, or how the site is managed, then DO NOT log on ever again!!! Please go elsewhere if this place is SO bad....go to one of there other GREAT and FREE sites that I hear guys talking about.
Snowest DID try to generate some income through voluntary donations BEFORE christopher was even here and let us know that a pay option was a possibility in the future BEFORE Christopher was here.
Put your $$ where your mouth is and NEVER log onto Snowest again....or are you here just to whine and cry for attention ??

you entirely miss the point... people have made invaluable connections on this site... so they feel its worth fighting for to get it back to the status(read awesome) it was before! is that so wrong?

That is my point. the PEOPLE made this site what it is. If the PEOPLE simply do not log on and all go to BCR or whatever free site they choose, then BCR will be the place that Snowest once was....quick and easy with no drama I joined up over there months ago and am surprised at the lack of hits that site gets....you can hear crickets over there. Why not just get everyone to go there INSTEAD of here....the only difference is the address.
Personally I think the biggest problem with Snowest lately has been from a handful of people that are not willing to pay the $10 a year to keep these "invaluable connections".
The slow servers need to be upgraded....it costs $$. Seems simple and fair enough, what would be a better option?? Keep it SLOWest? Make only certain people pay? Close the site? JMO-

pay for 1 site today...
...pay for every one of them in the future.
I thought the internet was supposed to be free?
It's just like every law that has ever been opposed by a few, then passed anyway. It is made to sound "ok" to the point that it is passed, it sets a precedent, and many more laws follow - and can't be stopped because of the precedent.
I wish Al Gore hadn't invented the internets!

Free for who? Everything costs $$, starting with the computer you are looking at right now....should that be free?
Everyone bags on Obama for wanting to give everyone something for nothing....welfare, medical coverage, etc....and I agree. But when we have to pay $9.99 a year for this, it's suddenly a different story....everyone wants it to be something for nothing.

WinterBrew - you're all over the place here. The arguments are largely disparate. The Obama argument is spurious at best - and I don't like Obama.
If you're going to charge for this site, chances are you'll loose most of the contributing members. The changes we've already seen have given SW a bad name and adversely affected performance. The moderation on here has gone to crap. If he was smart, he'd outsource this forum to a hosting company, rather he's going to build the wheel piece by piece in order to sell the story upstairs.
If you're worried about paying for servers, BW, etc.. Maybe ol' Christopher should rattle the cage and find out EXACTLY that his advertising revenue is bringing in and make that model work first. Do you realize he doesn't even know that! How'd you like to be paying for advertising, then find out that your revenue stream is going away so SW can charge membership fees?! (maybe that's how you become a MOD on here. LOL)
This is an attempt to sell out the good will of the community and our information/discussions as a supplemental income stream pure & simple. He got HP all amped up on his fancy features, and ran head on into a firestorm when he inadvertently announced early that he was going to cram all of this crap down our throats and force us to pay for his mis-adventures.
Maybe Hotmail, GMail, FaceBook, Twitter, etc.. all have it wrong & ol Christopher is way ahead of his time. Or maybe not.
