All the servers and computing power in the world won't fix a bad database... why does this keep happening? Thought this problem was fixed a while ago.
Throwing more power at a problem isn't always the solution.

Christopher - I hear and share your frustration. With 1000+ registered users at any given time, I bet you have a funding source at your fingertips should you need it.
Is there a "plan b" if simply adding a turbo doesn't make it handle better?

Well, how about we toss all the "upgrades" to the forum and clean up the current servers, put it back to the way it was, and once the new servers are approved and online, then make the upgrades and reinvent the wheel.
Cart before the horse comes to mind.
And I'm not just trying to be a smartazz about this, it's getting so bad that I hardly even post or read on here anymore. Got database errors today, slow even during non peak hours, and getting worse by the day. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG BESIDES THE HARDWARE. Strip the thing down a few notches and let it breath a little.
If your running the server at or beyond it's limits to try and get Harris to buckle and buy new equipment use it as an example, but get the forum back to running decent again before you drive everybody that actually contributes decent info to this forum away and there is no longer a need for upgraded equipment or shinny objects (not that I necessarily think there was to begin with).

I'm spending more and more time on www.h2oregon.com as I wait for pages to load. Not a real competitor in any way other than drawing away us Oregon folks from posting on Snowest, but hey, it works and feels like "community" which with all the sub forums, Snowest no longer does.....
(Hope this post actually posts without a glitch.....)

Hey, this thing is faster tonight. Either everyone is at the bar, polishing their sleds or admin ponied up and did something.
Yahoo. I can search and fly through the pages in 1/4 the time.

Are you being told you cannot change it back to where it was?? I've said it several times and have been told I'm on crack, sort of, but I'm sure there were 1000+ users on last winter and it's never been this slow.
Cumminsforum.com and snowmobilefanatics.com are getting a lot of my click time.

Come on guys, you have to fix this forum. I've been on this site since 2004 and this is the worst it's been.
Everytime I load a new page I see a blank white screen and a note at the bottom saying waiting on httpsnowest. It stays like this for 10-60 seconds and then quickly loads the page.
Once riding season starts there will be 10 times the traffic. Lets get it fixed so that the winter crowd can benefit from the once great snowest. There was nothing wrong with the way it was, and this is a classic case of don't fix something that isn't broke.

This was NOT a hardware or a software problem.
In this case, a person walked into the server room and REBOOTED one of our live servers without shutting down all of the open files first.
Net result.
MASSIVE CORRUPTION of the entire database sets.
It took us 3 hours to rebuild several gigabytes of SnoWest databases.

Yeah - random staff members just go into open server rooms, find production equipment and start pulling plugs. Probably executives who can't get email to work. None of the performance issues lately are in any way due to the ridiculous database and front end changes of the past year. Just stick with FireFox... ;-)
Rebuild databases? You don't have these files backed up? Wow.

Mule - now, you're digging deep. I think that would be the 2 charecter LED that was supposed to indicate the number of HDs in the chassis in case you *forgot*. LOL. Just a good pic I found on google images; can't claim it for my own.

that makes me think back and laugh lol...two years ago my aussie plumbing partner and i was fixing the hot water heating fins in a fairly large tax office....well my partner not wanting any obstructions just started unplugging cords from outlets above the fin we were working on or replacing....a little bit later all the staff started hollering to their manager that they lost all there clients information etc that they were working on...the clients were present as it was tax time etc....the manager hastily starts hacking at his computer as well and checking everything out...server was down etc etc...anyway the manager tracked everything down to my aussie partner unplugging everything and said to my partner...what the hell are you doing..!!!...my partner who was not quite aware of what interruptions to computers can do responded...oh its ok i only unplugged the stuff for a few minutes....i laughed it was priceless..!!

Plumbers. Enemy of low-voltage cabling.
A plumber and a cordless drill can cause more damage in a house or commercial structure than a pack of hungry mice.
These can be used for both data centers and for containing rogue plumbers!

Yeah, but just think how pretty it will be for the FEW users still left.
By the time it gets "better" it may be too late for many users.
But then, the experts know exactly what they are doing. They never make mistakes. And they don't need our feedback.

I believe this new admin to be a lot like the obama admin.
They are trying to collapse this once great site from with in. Devaluing
all the once rich information, and the site as a whole.
Look at the similarities between the two. It can't be overlooked, we the users need to wake up and take a stand before all the great things we once had on this site are lost. Remember, it has always been the members that make this site great, Not the Admin. Just like how the Gov has been destroying our country for years and the O admin seems to be doing it full steam ahead, this new SW Admin I believe to have an agenda to turn this place into a slow, greenie loving, socialist, let's save the world but over look our own issues kinda place.
Wake up Snowesters and notify harris publishing of the damage this new admin has done to this site before it is to late.

I'm not ready to say the new admin plan mirrors the Obama admin..... yet. But I see some similarities.
I don't like most of the new features, and I can certainly do without them if they are the reason for the slow speed of the site as a whole.
I'm not a computer guy, so I don't understand why the site is running so much slower. But, it is a coincidence that it got LOTS slower, LOTS more often with all the new 'changes'.
Personally, I have had slow load times, and problems with posts double posting, or not showing they posted, and/or loosing my post or PM content when I hit the 'submit' button. I am also constantly having to log back in now.
Administrators, please, from the comments I have seen, I think the majority of our membership would rather have speed than fancy features. Get the speed back, and if you really want to add features, make sure you can do that when the hardware will support the same speed with the new features.
I'm all for donating $ to the cause, but I'll tell you this, you won't get a dime from me until you listen to the members, and put the $ you already have in the direction the members want.
There are other forums out there, and if there is not, there are people here who understand how to start one, I'm sure.
Feel free to contact me if you want or need any clarification with my post.

Christopher do you value the input Snowesters have to offer? If so, there is a very simply and extremely logical fix to this broken situation.
TAKE A VOTE. Lay it out there, all in favor of sticking with the current expanded format or all in favor of rolling back to the traditional format.
After all the user make this site, not the admins. No users, no site. Bottom line. IMO, its time to take the voice of the user into consideration.

I don't think so, and neither does HP, they remind me of the dems for lack of a better comparision. So far all I have seen is they ask you what you think but don't listen and do what they want to do since they think it is best for everyone.
You can see how I feel about everything as I asked to not be a moderator any longer. Lots of stuff going on that I disagree with.

Its sad to see what is happening to the site.
There are other forums out there that cater to the sledding community.
I think it's time to go shopping for a new hang out.
Funny thing though...I was bit(hing about all the slowness and extra garbage that nobody wanted as soon as the new emperor took over and got flamed for it by all the "New Moderator Wannabes" It's good to see I'm in good company now.
Wake up HP before you lose your advertisers.
Christopher...I'm sure a teenager, playground type forum needs a new Emperor. They like all the kinds of crap you've loaded into this place.
We don't.
I'll be writing to HP but I doubt anyone will listen.
There must be some hidden agenda they're following over there.
What's a good Mountain/Western riding forum to move to people?

Well, Thumpertalk, the dirt forum recently added an entire snow section to the mix, not specificly a western riding forum but it's a clean slate for the most part run by people that know how to run a forum. ie, ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL dirtbike forums out there. They've added full separate forums for Quads, Streetbikes, JetSki's and Snowmobiles to their already hugely popular dirtbike forum. I've been poking around on there but so far there is very little as it is brand new. But it's fast and well organized.

Christopher, Harris Publishing:
I suspect a substantive update to the users in this community is due.
You've built something good here, we'd prefer to see it kept in working order.
Silence isn't the right approach.

I just sent Christopher a detailed PM. I was respectful, but I think the message will be clear when he reads it.
In it, I asked him for a simple poll, shared with him that I feel frequent updates are reasonable, and that his silence on this issue so far is not appreciated.
I don't have an axe to grind, I actually don't feel like i'm entitled to have one, since I don't pay to access this site, and, I'm a relative newbe to this forum.
I can only hope he will reply,
PE

funny!
Hey, I can be hard on folks, but I also want to share it when they do well:
I just sent Christopher the PM, and he replied within moments. In his reply was that new hardware is arriving soon, and he believes it will solve the speed issues for a long time.
I asked him to go public with it, hopefully he shares the details.

Now information is available in the dozens of sub categories, but it can take several mouse clicks to find answers to specific questions.
If the admin was looking for a way to show advertisers more activity on-site, they surely have found it!
I know some sites count every mouse click as a "hit." Or put another way, even a blind squirrel can find an acorn with enough tries.
So I don't expect admin will change anything based on my comments, but its too bad that the "home-town" kind of "feel" for this site has had a huge setback.
Dunno, does my rant make sense to others?

Your comments and concerns have NOT fallen on deaf ears. This was, and still is, the subject of significant debate behind the scenes. You specific post was flagged last night as part of the ongoing discussion as we continue to evaluate the impact of breaking out the contents of the 4 major sled forums into categories to allow members to look for specific information that is relevant to them, and not just relevant to the entire manufacturer's line of products.
