Its sad to see what is happening to the site.
There are other forums out there that cater to the sledding community.
I think it's time to go shopping for a new hang out.
Funny thing though...I was bit(hing about all the slowness and extra garbage that nobody wanted as soon as the new emperor took over and got flamed for it by all the "New Moderator Wannabes" It's good to see I'm in good company now.
Wake up HP before you lose your advertisers.
Christopher...I'm sure a teenager, playground type forum needs a new Emperor. They like all the kinds of crap you've loaded into this place.
We don't.
I'll be writing to HP but I doubt anyone will listen.
There must be some hidden agenda they're following over there.
What's a good Mountain/Western riding forum to move to people?

Well, Thumpertalk, the dirt forum recently added an entire snow section to the mix, not specificly a western riding forum but it's a clean slate for the most part run by people that know how to run a forum. ie, ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL dirtbike forums out there. They've added full separate forums for Quads, Streetbikes, JetSki's and Snowmobiles to their already hugely popular dirtbike forum. I've been poking around on there but so far there is very little as it is brand new. But it's fast and well organized.

Christopher, Harris Publishing:
I suspect a substantive update to the users in this community is due.
You've built something good here, we'd prefer to see it kept in working order.
Silence isn't the right approach.

I just sent Christopher a detailed PM. I was respectful, but I think the message will be clear when he reads it.
In it, I asked him for a simple poll, shared with him that I feel frequent updates are reasonable, and that his silence on this issue so far is not appreciated.
I don't have an axe to grind, I actually don't feel like i'm entitled to have one, since I don't pay to access this site, and, I'm a relative newbe to this forum.
I can only hope he will reply,
PE

funny!
Hey, I can be hard on folks, but I also want to share it when they do well:
I just sent Christopher the PM, and he replied within moments. In his reply was that new hardware is arriving soon, and he believes it will solve the speed issues for a long time.
I asked him to go public with it, hopefully he shares the details.

Now information is available in the dozens of sub categories, but it can take several mouse clicks to find answers to specific questions.
If the admin was looking for a way to show advertisers more activity on-site, they surely have found it!
I know some sites count every mouse click as a "hit." Or put another way, even a blind squirrel can find an acorn with enough tries.
So I don't expect admin will change anything based on my comments, but its too bad that the "home-town" kind of "feel" for this site has had a huge setback.
Dunno, does my rant make sense to others?

Your comments and concerns have NOT fallen on deaf ears. This was, and still is, the subject of significant debate behind the scenes. You specific post was flagged last night as part of the ongoing discussion as we continue to evaluate the impact of breaking out the contents of the 4 major sled forums into categories to allow members to look for specific information that is relevant to them, and not just relevant to the entire manufacturer's line of products.

Your so called "Dictator" hears far more than you might imagine. And while you sit there and accuse me of Rectal Cranial Inversion, the last time I checked, building a highway usually requires that you rip the road out first, shut it down to traffic and then rebuild it from ground up. Meanwhile everyone is forced into a detour for months and months while the road crew does it's job. That was not an available option for us. So everyone here is suffering from all the "work in progress" and complaining bitterly about the pot holes, dirt, mud, noise, traffic delays, ect..
Traffic will be restored very shortly now, and the speed limit will be quite a bit higher than it was before. Hopefully when you look back on all the trouble, it will have been worth it.

Re: rectal cranial inversion
Lol, first I wish to give you a pat on the back for having a sense of humor. I have been around for quite some time. This site has seen better/faster days, however in comparison to a week ago we are smokin along this week. I agree, it is not as fast as it has been in the past and as is human nature... creates frustration and complaints. I have seen some changes since this has started. I think they will eventually become good. The information that was available here is still available, it takes a little longer but some things are worth the wait. I know how computers roll, sometimes things seem pretty simple and get a little out of hand and by the time it is over the simple conversion cost rediculous $$$ and involved a bunch of people and time... etc. I hope and believe that there is a plan and it will get better.
Good Luck
Ps.... oh yeah get your $$$hit together or we are all leaving..... just kiddin
You know how to keep a complainer from drowning? Take your foot off his head!!!

Consider it this way.
There is no one on SnoWest more than me lately.
And for all the stuff I spend my day doing in the background, I have to wait/suffer from the slowness just exactly the same as everyone else does.
If there is anyone on SnoWest that wants it to SPEED UP, its ME!!

no chance on that one.
I have been saying for some time we were working on the solution, but I have never offered anyone a solid date, because I simply didn't have one.
On Monday I expect to have a ship date for the new hardware. Once I have that in my hot little hand, THEN I will let everyone know that a real solution is inbound.

Christopher,
Welcome to the dialogue. Glad you're acknowledging the performance issue and we don't have to keep changing browsers anymore. Opera and Maxthon seem to be the fastest. 1997 Mosaic is terrible. Firefox is buggy, IE crashes constantly and Safari doesn't support well....almost anything that IE does. Net = browsers are not the issue.
Do you seriously think this is simply and only a CPU/processing/RAM/Disk access aka horsepower issue? Are you running this site on TRS80's?
Don't you have a hint that there may be something oddly wrong with how the application front end works with the database, or the structure of the database, or similar architecture issue?
I fail to see how the number of "registered" users affects site performance - especially if they're not LOGGED IN and just watching from the sidelines.
The original forum (albiet simple) format was working for years and made Snowest what it is today. (yes, both Fusetalk and VBulletin)
I think you should seriously (did I say SERIOUSLY) consider building something along those lines and is eerily similar format to the original version.
It worked well up until the plethora of un-needed changes of the last year.
There's value in improving a product, but there's also value in being a bit conservative in modifying something that already works well!
Good luck with it!
All ribbing aside, we hope you succeed.

Look at the similarities between the two. It can't be overlooked, we the users need to wake up and take a stand before all the great things we once had on this site are lost. Remember, it has always been the members that make this site great, Not the Admin. Just like how the Gov has been destroying our country for years and the O admin seems to be doing it full steam ahead, this new SW Admin I believe to have an agenda to turn this place into a slow, greenie loving, socialist, let's save the world but over look our own issues kinda place.
Wake up Snowesters and notify harris publishing of the damage this new admin has done to this site before it is to late.

Wow! I am just amazed how the similarities keep stacking up. First the O admin wants us the American tax payers to bailout all the losers of this country. Now the SW admin wants us the users to bail them out.
We will be paying for this site by Dec 1 2009 if not sooner. Or at least those who stick around.

I have no problem with paying/contributing for something I use frequently (SW4M), but if they decide to sock the contributors of this site too much, that will ring the death bell for sure...
The content is basically created for free, and Harris uses it to sell advertising, magazines, events, etc..
Seeing how they're very concerned about the large group of users who look, but don't post if they're going to a paid model they should require the lurkers (the larger group) to buy in.
Hope & Change!
