PowersportRentals.com nickel & dimes, and doesn’t own up to post sale responsibilitie

Several weeks ago we rented 3 sleds for two days from WildFun PowerSport rentals. We were given a price of 189/day. Later told we’d have to pay for oil. But don’t worry, because they buy in bulk, they’d discount to $44/gallon. That's $4 more than the local store; nice discount. That should have been our 2nd warning after they were quick to bash ActionRentals as “working out of a shack”. Unfortunately, the problems kept going on. For the privilege of taking our money over the phone, we were then told we’d have to pay another 3% for credit card fees. Just another way to jack the costs. At one point we were told, rent for 2 days, get the third free. But that got wishy washy as well. After an hour of painstaking noting any and all subtle scratches, we finally got on our way. It was quite a “show”.

The sleds were nice and comfortable for “family riding” of 2-3 people. But dare get off the packed trail to play in a field like government meadow, and the lame 1” paddles just dig you in.

Unfortunately, we broke one of the windshields after falling in a hole at Government Cabin, but fully expected to pay for the damage. Rather than simply charging X when we returned the sled, they refused to give us a price. They order the parts, wait for them to come in, than credit the difference from the deposit; a whopping $800/sled. Only after calling several times, now more than 3 weeks later, they wanted to charge us $170 for the stock windshield, yet they had cheaper aftermarket shields. I only know this because when I called to get the year and model for comparison, the parts guy told me they weren’t stock. Had I not checked, who knows what we would have been charged. And why can’t they just charge us upon return? It’s a windshield, it doesn’t get more basic than that.

Watch out for the flipping ramp: The trailer provided was a 3place trailer with a detachable ramp. What we didn’t know was the ramp design was so dangerous that when we drove up on the ramp, there was nothing locking it, so it just slid forward and flipped back onto the hood. It just barely missed whacking me in the head. When we returned the sled, we were told the front grab rail was damaged and we’d have to replace it. We were told, “yeah, that happened to me last week” as well and we should have tied it down. And we were supposed to guess this how? No instruction for the dangerous ramp, yet they knew it was a problem. No bother to make it better. In this case, since the ramp was a poor and dangerous design we really didn’t feel we should be have to pay for this damage as it was clearly a flawed and dangerous design they could have easily fixed with a slot in the end of the bed. Again, we had to call several times over several weeks just to remind them we wanted to close this out. We offered to pay half the cost of the grab rail, but no. We were offered ½ the parts and labor @ $129/hr.
At first, they seemed very detail oriented and helpful. Nice sales pitch with the perception of great support. Even gave us bottled water when we got there. Everything was a project with these guys. And once they had our money, no more friendly service. Although we were told they’d call us with the damage costs, we had to continually call them to figure this out. Still haven’t closed this out.

I don’t often do this, but I’d definitely have to recommend staying away from WildFun PowerSport Rentals. There all slick up front sales, but once they got your money, watch out. Their fees are excessive, and they just have an unrealistic view of a rental machine. We’ve rented from Easton Snowmobile Rentals and Cascade Playtime Rentals and never had problems anywhere near this. No hidden nuisance feels, oil included, and Cascade, they use the slogan, “ride it like a rental”. eTicket PowerSports was highly recommended for the Greenwater area, and should have heeded the advice. Action would have probably been fine as well.

Rather than have a fun weekend with the family, we’ve got nothing but an unresponsive company who doesn’t seem to understand return business. We really wanted this to go easy. But it was just such a hassle, and it's still not done.
Luckily, we used a credit card, so we’ll simply dispute the fees and hope to resolve this. Guess I now understand why their credit fees are high.

Believe it or not, it does cost about 3% to process credit card transactions, not too many places pass that on the customer as an extra charge though unless it's something major. I've heard of rental companies that will use aftermarket parts and then charge the customer full retail of OEM, plus. Heck, I know of a place in the Black Hills that was buying Amsoil from me and then after the Amsoil was gone they were putting Wal Mart oil in the jug and selling it in their store as Amsoil. Why people have to be crooks about it is beyond me, if they can't make a good honest living treating people fair then they need to find someone to go work for.

Hopefully your posting this will save someone else the same headache. I would have walked away at $44/gal oil!!!! ;)

Damn.

Just had an issue with the local rental shop, called and asked to hold two sleds and a 4-place trailer for the weekend.... don't know if the guy didn't understand me or whatever, but I called this afternoon and they were down to 1 trail sled.

Thanks, jerks.

call visa...they will have their CC machine pulled quicker than quick for charging that 3%

It gets even better... I just checked my statement. In addition to the rental fee, they charged my credit card for the $2,400 deposit. They're funding their business with my money! Now I understand why he's dragging his feet to get the sled fixed and close this out. All well respecting companies do what's called a "pre-auth" on the card, which allows them to hold and guarantee funds. When the sled is returned, they're suppose to "settle" the actual amount. If you return in good condition, no charge ever shows up on the card. In my case, I should have an additional $100 for the damage. This is what hotels, rental car companies and other sled rental companies.
Flit-e, I think you're right. I remember some law being passed that said it was illegal to charge more for credit cards. Yes, taking credit cards has a fee. The fee is higher for dead-beat merchants like this one.
I'm just amazed...

That's the second time I have heard a story like this from that company. I bought two hoods from a guy that had rented sleds from them. He was into them for almost $4000 in damages. The one hood simply had scuff marks on the front from running into the back of another sled. The other had a couple hairline cracks. So two broken front bumpers and two hoods. $4000. They offered no insurance to him when he rented or he said he would have done that.

Heard the same story about the insurance. His company won't offer it, yet the other story is he discounts his sleds if you order ahead two weeks because his insurance carrier gives him a break. "If they plan ahead, they're less likely to cause damage". Never heard this from any of the other rental places.
The damage we had on the sleds was a minor scratch on the front grab handle. You need to go under the machine to see it, and I was told it was only cosmetic. WTF.

The sad thing is we went with them because they have a "real shop" and seemed very professional. We were renting for multiple days, riding around Greenwater and didn't want to take the chance with a sled company that might not take care of them and break down.

They just appear to be real snakes

Dispute the charge and report it to the BBB for the area.
Also, contact the local states att. General and put in a fraud charge.
Also, contact the local sled clubs and post the info on their pages (if you can).
Once you have done all that, sit back and don't call him anymore.
Trust me, he will contact you once the dispute hits his desk.
Don't wait on the dispute. If he can stall you for 30 days, you are stuck with it.

If you do damage a rental sled DEMAND that you get all of the damaged parts returned to you.
I have seen rental places back peddle and work out a better deal if you ask for the parts back.
If you payed for them, the old ones are yours.

Call better business bureau, some people do check there for reference. Ya, one has to be careful these days with EVERYTHING!!!! Greed is killing this country....

It is illigal to charge a customer the credit card fee on a transaction. it is called a "cost of doing business" And it must be posted somwhere that there is a cash price and a credit price!

I hate to hear stories like this. However there are criminals out there!

visa and mc will not tolerate businesses charging the 3% (or whatever the going rate is) to the customer, if they tell you that up front, tell them you want it listed on the reciept, then contact visa/mc and they will deal with the vendor. ski
