Visiting in 2 weeks

We will be in McCall week of 24th through the 31st. The wife and I were in Cascade a few years ago for a weekend and rode out of Anderson Creek. I can't wait to check out a few more of the areas discussed in this thread. We sure would like to ride with a few of you.

Wheresthesnow, I don't have a business here in McCall but I just enjoy pointing out our great riding to all of you. We have so much country that you can go from flat groomed trails to the absolutely vertical cliffs (if you want to) and not see anyone else. We were out last Friday too and the sun was shining for the first time in a while and the snow was great, had to be a 9.95 out of 10.0, and just got stuck a few times and saw 5 other riders.

Our grooming program is in excellent hands this last couple of years. We have great operators out there at night in some pretty bad conditions, working 14 hr shifts in real white-outs the last few weeks, keeping the trails in good shape during the Holidays extra traffic. Many thanks to them.

If you would like more directions or hints on where to go and play, PM me with what you want and how you ride and I will try to point you in the right direction with the help of the maps on the web sites. Spud

sorry about the "secret spot" thing, Hauler. (inside joke)

Thanks a bunch. I last went to McCall in 1998, the trails were like freeways. Back then anybody you asked about where to go they all said "Granite", and "you just got to get off the trail". After 2 days of trail riding and the "you got to get off the trail" on the brain I started to try to get off the trail, the problem is I had a Mach Z 780 and everybody else had way less, and they were all older, but I could see the point to the "you got to get off the trail"comment's. But I know now that McCall is all that and a bucket of chicken. Im coming there it looks like the 27th-31st. I have been looking at my gps maps a bunch, and the trail maps that I found links to on here, which are awesome by the way, especially the one that has the difficulty ratings. I will have my wife and kids so that will be handy. Thanks, I will let you know if I need some directions. One question I have though is, is Wong's bowl named after Wally Wong and if it is what did he do to get that. Ive heard of him from guys that drag raced alot back inthe 90's.

man! there you go again SPUD! haha j/k :D;)

I too would like to how that bowl got it's name and a little more info on the gps links. I was wondering about that and if guys ( self included) could load their gps "tracks" on a site for others to download...?

be there this time next week hopefully.

Supposedly, back in the day, Wong was one of the few people that could make it there. They said he went up there a lot, so they named the bowl after him. Some of the McCall snowmobile club guys talk about him like he was superman.

Loulie(sp) Wong was the first performance shop in this area and did alot of testing the machines he modded in that particular bowl. You could just about find him and his son Todd up in the bowl (it seemed like) every time you went in there. Back then it was how you guaged how the mods worked by how high you went up on the hill. I remember a 1978 Kawasaki Invader that I had Wong's do a tunnel lift and some other light mods to and was proud as he11 cuz I got half way up the hill. This was about 1980. The bowl just became Wong's bowl because every time you would talk to someone about snowmobiling and mentioned the bowl that wongs were always in, everyone in the snowmobiling community knew where you were talking about. It just naturally became Wong's Bowl.

In the day he was. Would have to compare him to guys today like Brad Story and those alike.

I don't know how to spell his name, but I was told it was really pronounced "LowLee", but others called him "Loylee". He didn't seem to care.

One of the way early mod guys. Famous for chain case roll kits for polaris, and put a LOT of rotax engines into polaris chassis. I never saw him mad, I never saw him say bad words.

I did see him when he was sick with Liver cancer, and held up to the end with a cheerful smile and friendly greeting for most everyone.

A quality guy. His shop was outside of Parma Idaho, in some little town I forget the name of. His son Todd is also a Heck of a snowmobiler.

Had an amazingly great ride in McCall yesterday! SUNNY and just an absolutely beautiful day. Only 5" of new on all of the rest that is really set up but we still found EXCELLENT tree riding. Any opening semi protected from the direct sun and too much sled traffic is as good as it gets for free riding. WOW very happily surprised. Funny because on our way up one group called and said it was terrible and another called and said it was still really pretty good. We stumbled on the pretty good stuff!

Of course it's terrible where it's all tracked up and constantly exposed to the sun and overly wind blown but there's still plenty of dry powder that doesnt see much sun to be had - just enough base to let you go but soft enough to let you get stuck. We just cant ride enough to track it all up ourselves but I can tell you Tuesday and Wednesday were sick days!!!!! Perfect temps, beautiful blue bird days, awesom snow..... I wish I were riding today but I'm too sore.

Well yesterday had to be a top 10 all year simply because the weather was so incredible plus there was enough snow to carve around in! I tore it up until I could barely hang on anymore...not much fuel left in em either. Shoulder all swollen and sore.... it's just awesome:D:D!

There are millions of more spots to beat up and we left many with just a couple of tracks as we hurried along to the next one. I could go back tomorrow and do it all over again and have just as much fun. The only people not having a great ride in McCall are not trying to get off the main riding spots very hard. Oh ya...we saw a grand total of three sleds in one spot and three in one other on the trail home. CRAZY....we are sooooOOOooo lucky

Got through some pics from Tuesday, thought I'd share...

Great pics...that first one is excellent!

Will the conditions in McCall be similar to the Island Park area? Will be my first time out (staying near the reservoir) but will be with experienced riders, although the area is fairly new to them also.

Powdergirl, what were you shooting for those pics? I'm debating on whether or not to carry the DSLR up with me in my pack....or just stick to the point and shoot.

I dont leave home without my Rebel XTI - I would slap my self silly if I missed out on an opportune shot! I also always carry my video camera. I need the extra weight to help throw my sled around anyway.

allright Powder Girl, I have to try and keep up

We went out Thursday too, rode 65 miles and had a ball and some of the pictures I tried to take are enclosed. Cannot keep up with the ones Powder Girl takes thou. Note the lack of tracks......even in that bowl.

Spud. (probably cannot even keep up with her riding.)

Not to hijack the post anymore.....but....

That's good to hear, and all those shots are great...but I really like the first shot!!!! I have an XTI also.....what lens were you shooting? I just picked up a 70-200 2.8L IS I was thinking about carrying. It's heavy but my only other lens is the kit lens........

Also...anything special you do to carry the setup or just throw it in a pack?
