2002 600 RMK Temp Light On & Timing Retarded

I have a 2002 600 RMK and when I first start it up the temp light is on and idles rough. Usually does this for the first 20-30 seconds and the light goes out and runs smooth. Someone told me that it is programmed to retard timing to built heat in the pipe and I suppose easier starting. Is this correct or do I have something else wrong?

Temp sensor gone bad on top of cylinder head cover. Change it out and it will go away.

You hit it on the head with "timing retard".
When it senses high temp (or goes bad) that is exactly what it does.
Poo had a batch of fragile sensors in the early liberty years.
On a 02 I would just get the slp temp sensor bypass and use that instead.
(along with an actuall temp guage of course);)

'02 temp sensors were the bad batch that were headaches, great model year with strong running engines when the temp sensor was good and updated. I'd remove the thermostat also, I did on all my XC's, Pro-X's, and Edge RMK's and ran way better.
